So how did this coin grade as it did? I guess the REV is 5% of the grade?

Here's a toner I recently picked up on Teletrade that could add to this discussion. What do you think? AT or NT? Grade? Eye appeal?

Nice the original surfaces can be seen through that toning so we know it's not a "trick coin"!

I would personally grade that coin an MS-63 nice cartwheel no obvious wear

Toning seems very natural to me

When I grade a Morgan, I stop first at the cheek, ear/hair right above, cotton bolls, and the top of the cap on the obverse. I just gather data, no conclusions. Then I look at the reverse. Eagle's breast, neck, legs, talons, leading edge of the wings and the largest leaves in the wreath.

Morgan obverses are deceptive; the same places show wear and a weak strike at the same time. Reverses are different. The breast shows the first wear; in my experience, the talons, legs and big leaves show strike artifacts first.

I'm torn with the grade of this coin. Gimme a few minutes.

The toning? Fugly. Not original, but not artificial. Natural but recent, within the last 20 years. It happened quickly, before it could spread naturally, but it was blast white for the first 90 years of life.

Take your time guys. I find this coin attractive in-hand with a surprise from NGC.

Yeah good point I might penalize it an additional half grade or so for that toning it's not attractive PCGS would probably ding it down to a 62.

(obverse toning is OK and almost attractive but the reverse is a bit of a disaster)

I'm finding the reverse very helpful on Lincoln Wheat Cents too as a I try to learn how to grade them. Those wheat stalks don't lie (!)

And here's the slab. I thought NGC might have docked it a point for the toning? It really looked like a solid 63 (shot 64) to me. $44 total with the Buyer's Premium and delivery so it wasn't expensive and has a look you don't see everyday.

I think the problem is that the coin isn't showing enough luster through the toning. As a general rule, occasionally broken (as we saw with the "smoker" coin), TPG's won't go high grade for coins that do not exhibit blazing luster.

EDIT: Crack it open and dip it? :) Might be educational.

Yes, a common date with interesting toning. I was reading some of the earlier posts about toning and thought I'd post this piece. I picked up a few Morgans on Teletrade last week and think this one went for $35 + Buyer's Premium & Delivery. It didn't even make the minimum on the BP, which I didn't know about at that time because I'd never won a coin that cheap. I guess they have a $7 minimum on the BP. Still, I like it.
