Well the big winter storm brought some time off from work for me so I decided to catch up on updating some of my folders. I was plugging away on some cents when my four year old son comes up to me and says these don't fit while trying to shove cents into a dime folder. He found dad's secret coin hiding space and grabbed an empty folder announcing that he wants to take his "penny" folder {there all pennies to him!} for show-n-tell at pre-school on Friday. Well I got a big smile on my face and the hunt for Roosevelt dimes was on. Emptying change jars, piggy banks and the like. After amassing about eight dollars face we proceeded to start filling holes. Little dude made it to about the three dollar mark then his interest wained and went back to creating his Lego dinosaur-helicopter-car.

Well, needless to say, dad here finished off the project and filled the folder up about half way or so. All clad's-1965 to 2004 D {Whitman #2 folder}. Probably could have done more but I just did a change dump late last week. I presented it to him, got a big hug and he placed it in the show-n-tell box that he's taking to school!

Excellent story. Hope it goes well for the tell and show (keep us informed). And, lets face it, when you're four years old a "Lego dinosaur-helicopter-car' is far more important than a bunch of old coins!
With a bit of luck and encouragement he'll eventualy give up on the Lego and concentrate on the more important things in life...like coins!

Thank you for sharing!

My son will be three. His interest in coins is minimal, but he loves to collect, count, and stack them. He then hides them in boxes. So cute.

I will get him to the folder stage eventually.

I did the same thing with a box of pennies and my 3 1/2 year old daughter. She knows the denominations pretty well now, she likes dimes and quarters the most. She likes pennies a lot too.

I love it! But remind him to have the teacher lock up his folder while they're at recess - I lost a 1913-S Wheat cent in 8th grade by NOT following my own advice.

Glad I dropped in to read this, little ones are precious and need love and guidance from us.Even at a young age they will remember the time dad was busy but he helped me with show and tell or whatever. My son now collects coins and we talk as we go over our collections together,he's 51yrs. old now and brings up "remember when".It always warms my heart when he does that. gasman96

Great story and hopefully he continues this hobby. Who knows, someday he may be showing you a thing or two about coins.

And that is really a shame with so many kids now days. They really don't understand that someday, and some sooner than others, all that will or could be theirs. And with little to no interest, probably all just sold to a dealer for a little over face value.

Interested in collecting? I couldn't get mine to cut the lawn. Now, even as grown men, they'd rather play "Tour of Duty version MCII.

Until he plays hide and seek with a bunch of world silver coins Been there, done that!

Gasman, I admire your guidance and hope that I will have the same cherished memories too! My collection is now three generations old and intend to pass it onto my two children. My oldest {1st grade daughter aka little miss can't be wrong} started collecting Sacagawea dollars complements of the "Tooth Fairy"! She loves them and the history behind the coin too.

I love all the other coments too! Hope everyone enjoyed it.

Well, he only gets to play with my change for now. It will probably be a long time before I show him my collection.

Well the Show-N-Tell was a grand success! I guess when he pulled out that blue folder packed with dimes and announced this was HIS coin collection he had the undivided attention of the entire class! Everyone oohed and aahed. The teacher said she had never seen such a reaction for such an item and this was the first time anyone had brought in coins in her twenty some odd years of teaching!

HHMMMM, sounds like an openinig for a coin collector to give some talks to that class on coins. You may become a star to those kids.

Great story. I love to get kids interested in coin collecting. If it means giving some coins and supplies away, so be it ;-)
