Ok, so I found some coins from a shoebox in my husbands closet from when he was a kid. He doesn't even know I've found them. I want to see if I can get some help on how to find out if they are worth something.

After spending all afternoon on this forum (literally 6 hours straight) it seems like some of these coins are a lot like some of the ones posted here on the forum.

Here are some pictures of some of the ones I've found:

I found about 50 more simiar to this with small markings which make them slightly different. To say I'm a greenhorn at this is an understatement. Any help is appreciated.

thanks!

Cool!
The silver content alone is around $29 each on morgan and Peace dollars...
As for numismatic value, post a list of all the years and mint marks and then you'll get a request for some pictures of the rare ones
Good luck!

First off

The best way to get an understanding is post a list of years and mint marks to try and narrow the field a little bit. Some years are better then others.

After that we all will ask for photos of both sides, one at a time. This will keep it a little less overwhelming for many of us as well as a little more interesting in the long run.

These coins in there condition, with out seeing the obverse, front, and the reverse, back, of each coin looks like they are about the present day melt price for the coins, which for either the Morgan silver dollar, or the Peace dollar the amount of silver in these coins are the same and being the silver melt price as of Friday was #37.00 + would mean the coins are worth at least 28-30 dollars each.

I would also note there could be some better dated coins in better condition worth more money.... Good luck, Mike..... PS, Welcome to the forum!!!

Welcome !

If either of those 1899 Morgans do not have a mintmark on the reverse, you could be on to something.

to the forum!

That sounds like a great find! As they said above, a complete list will help. And since your new...DON'T CLEAN THE COINS! Leave them as is because cleaning the coins will decrease any numismatic value they have. I'd also be interested in the story on how your husband collected these as a kid.

I am not sure why you would not tell your husband you found his coins.

Or what your motivation is .. in finding out what his coins are worth

something like that you should be doing together

First, my husband tried to give away these coins about 6 years ago, I stopped him.

Second, he thought he had lost them and last night I found them in the attic.

Third, my husband is a fisherman and he has been wanting a new depth finder for his boat but hasn't had the money to get it because he always is helping other people.

Fourth, I was hoping by finding the coins I might surprise him in enlightening him how much they are worth. (why I found this forum)

Fifth, I don't think I need to have to explain myself as to why I do the things I do within my family to a perfect stranger. I do find it somewhat rude to call me out and furthermore suggest your opinion on how I should operate within my family.

I agree with Goldrush. Those coins MAY mean much more to your husband than you know. You've got to let him know you are looking at them. Just saying.. Nobody...NOBODY "plays" with my collection unless I know....

Posted at the same time. Still you c*me here for an opinion. While you find it offensive for goldrush to question your motives he has every right to do so. This is the internet. People with less than gregarious intentions use it all the time. There is a reason this is known as the coin community FAMILY....we do care and look out for its members! IMHO!

One - I was trying to say it in a way that was not to rude. I spend a lot of time in coin
shops and see people selling coins that are not theirs all the time .. and see the owners come trying
to get them back.

Two - you asked strangers questions about coins and should know how to deal with what ever
answer you get.

All you said in your opening post was that you found your husbands coins .. he doesn't know
and you want to know what their worth. I still say .. work with you husband .. with his coins

I am not here to argue .. and will not respond further to this thread
