About 20 years ago I was going through another phase of the coin collecting bug and was looking through a coin magazine. In it I saw an ad that was selling common-date Roosevelt dimes. The copy read, "Stock up now on this soon-to-be-discontinued design!" That caught me by surprise, since I was unaware that we were on the verge of a new 10-cent design. So I called the company and spoke to the owner. I said excitedly, "Gee, I didn't know the Roosevelt design was about to be changed!" The man replied in a very curt manner, "Well listen my friend, a design like that that has been around for so long is bound to be changed soon." I thanked him for this valuable information and hung up. Anyone have similar tales to relate? Edited by jpsned 04/12/2011 10:37 pm

How about those Seen on TV Ads for $50 Gold Buffalo Coins! Only $19.95 + S&H for a limited time!
I could post the site, but not sure if I can here.
Announcer tries to make it sound like it's part of the US Mint. You know they're preying on fixed income at-home shoppers that don't know any better.
Guy says: 'The Limited Collectors Edition $50 Gold Coin is clad in 31mg of PURE 24kt GOLD!'
31mg is something like $1.50 of actual gold....

I'm not a collector of currency, but how about the commercial that seems to be everywhere about the painted $2 bills... I think that is worse than the colorized State Quarters...

Caught a show on HSN a couple nights ago called coin collector. They were selling a box of 1500 pennies for 99.95, including 3 or 4 rolls of CIRCULATED wheat pennies. The host said wheat pennies "usually sell for about sixty cents a piece". I'm glad I have a trusty local coin dealer...

every time I see the commercials for the gold-clad buffaloes and the colorized $2 bills), I end up feeling bad for the people who buy these things thinking they're getting something valuable but instead are getting ripped off

You wanna see the funny rip offs just watch the home shopping network or one of those types of channels when they do the coin collecting hours. They sell stuff for 10 to 15 times the normal value of that coin

This reminds me of all those 9/11 coin commercials acting like they are a limited run, with a "COA" ect and you have to pay attention to hear them say "layered in such and such carat gold. It kills me to see such crap advertised and prey on naive people.

One coin I researched, after finding one of these in the wild, was a gold-plated Kennedy half with either "1960 1980" or "1960 1985" engraved above the motto. It turns out a company was selling them back in the 1980's for something like $6 a piece, to commemorate the 20th or 25th anniversary of JFK's election. While not totally a coin, but still rife with misinformation, a pocket knife with an original Buffalo nickel in it (some versions even had colorized versions; I hope they didn't take original, full date coins and colorized them). One line in the commercial stated that the Buffalo nickel's first mintage was in 1920, to top things off.

When I first became interested in coin collecting, I watched a show called "The Coin Vault" for hours and hours, and could not get enough of it. The host of that show is now with another home shopping network, but I learned a lot of information that my mind could not get enough of it! In January/February 200, I made my first ASE purchase - (2) 2000 ASE and paid a total of $31.90 (with shipping in that price) for the two coins. Yes, I realized months later, after getting m ore involved in coin collecting, I paid more then I could have from a local dealer. But I learned, so I thought. Jump ahead to today and with the price of silver over $40, it was not such a bad deal I made over ten years ago.LOL But more importantly, I have received a LOT of enjoyment, satisfaction and education in coin collecting, and, am so thankful I spent all those countless hours watching that show. Of course my wife says I need a 12-step program for addiction, but what can I say?

Yes, I definitely have to agree with that. My wife and I were watching TV the other evening and one of these idiot-mercials came on yapping about the "$50 gold Buffalo" coin and it's TINY amount of gold. Most Americans do not know what a gram is, let alone a milli-gram. I mentioned this to my wife and she replied that she did not know that a few milli-grams was such a tiny amount... but it is. Think something about the size of a pin-head. Those silly colorized $2 bills are even worse. Add about 10 cents worth of ink to a normal $2 bill and then sell it for $10. Now is that a business or what? One would think that coloring a bill like that would get a guy into trouble for "defacing US currency" or something. If it doesn't, maybe it should.

Just don't say what YOUR amount is.
