I have to agree. I have a very limited span of coins I look for and mostly the only hits I find are for the same ol' over-priced drek. Our only consolation in this is that the sellers have to constantly pay fees to post that crap.

No consolation Prethen. No listing fees. Just a big 9% final value fee. Paypal fees too.

I pretty much don't use ebay anymore to buy coins, to much junk and at times crazy prices.

I use a targeted search and that's still working well - for example, in Lincoln Wheat Cents, 1920-1929, I search for (BU, MS, UNC*) 192*. This gives me anything that matches BU or MS or starts with UNC AND has 192 in it.

I'm not having any problems. Oh the advantages of not collecting the same thing that 90% of the rest of the collectors chase. My only problem is that most everything that comes up is common material that I already have.

I listed a few of my duplicate VAM's at what I thought were high prices and to my dismay they all sold one for the BIN price which was 250.00 over what I thought it should bring. The thing about it is the ones that purchased these VAM's now have the coins relisted at 3 and 4 times the price they paid. (one sold for 400.00 and is now listed at 1500.00, one sold at 360.00 and now listed at $1000.00, and another at $350.00 that is now listed at $900.00) so which one is crazy, me for selling so low or them for thinking they will get those prices? Quote: Our only consolation in this is that the sellers have to constantly pay fees to post that crap. This used to be true but since they can list and add a BIN without any fee's now this is not the case any longer

I used to be an avid ebay seller back in the late 90's. Then they turned into greedbay. I still use it sometimes, but only when I have no other option - I get tired of them getting such a large chunk of the profits compared to the old days. However, I still do buy some things there and am looking at a few interesting coins right now.

hmmm I had no idea this was happening but then again I don't use ebay that much. You guys are right though the fees they keep making have ruined what used to be a great thing

I always ask our members first if I need anything I'm working on Barber dimes right now and have been VERY selective what I have bought on ebay. I have purchased a few, including an 1895-O which I scored on but, I agree ebay sellers are a coin toss. Just make sure they have a return policy in place in case of switches or just not what you expected in hand.

I always avoid Buy It now and look for the auctions that start low, like $0.99 or whatever. Searching for completed auctions is great too. I've tabulated averages and the strategy works great. It helps me set my threshold. If someone out bids me then I add the data point and move on to the next. It may increase my max bid by 10 cents or so. But yeah, lots of overpriced stuff on ebay... and not just coins! Maybe this nuclear bidding and high asking prices that are driven by ebay fees is in turn driving inflation? -- Boris
