I'm considering putting an offer in for this Half, but wanted to consult you guys first so that I don't over value it, like I did with the last CC Morgan I bought .

That could be a very expensive coin. Are you buying it raw? Are you buying it online or in person?
Personally, I don't think I would buy that coin online unless it was certified and sold by a reputable seller.

I haven't committed for sure, but I would be buying raw and in person. What do you estimate its value to be, nolaywer?

I don't collect this series so I am far from being an expert on Bust halves. To my eyes it looks to have AU55 or 58 details. Numismedia has them listed for $2,280 in AU55 & $3,180 in AU58. It is hard to tell from the photos, but my guess is that the coin is not problem-free; otherwise, it would be in a slab.
Like I said, I don't know much about this series. I would wait for others to chime in before making a decision.

Yea, I hear ya. Thanks for the input. Looking forward to hearing other responses. What do you mainly collect?

Welcome to the forum, I collect a few different things, but my focus lately has been on my Barber quarter collection and my certified type set. Being from New Orleans, I'm hoping to put together a collection of all of the O-minted silver coins. That is why I was interested in this thread. The 1839-O is a hard coin to find. There are only 3 listed on ebay at the moment, and they all appear to be problem coins. What do you mainly collect, leveled?

I was pretty big into Franklin and Kennedy halves for a while. I have a pretty extensive collection of both. Recently though, I've been getting into the Morgans, Walking halves, and Merc Dimes, so I look forward to getting acquainted with the forum. It seems like there's a bunch of really good info on here so I'll be using it frequently!

The 1839 o is the first "real" production half from New Orleans. The appearance is good and it would make a fine complement to my 1838 half. Obviously you will need to be careful with this expensive possibility.

Quote: Numismedia has them listed for $2,280 in AU55 & $3,180 in AU58 Numismedia must be high end retail prices as the most recent greysheet quarterly has this coin at $850.00 in AU-50. Normal retail then would be about 20% more or $1020.00. Unless this coin is a scarce or rare VAM then I would be very careful not to pay much more than $1000.00 for this coin and if possible closer to the $850.00 wholesale price. ANA LM-3175

For most coins, I would agree with Gyrene7483; however, the 1839-O halves are not that easy to find and buyers will usually have to pay a premium to obtain them. For instance, a PCGS VF35 1839-O recently sold for $1,035 on heritage even though greysheet has them in XF at $575. An AU50 sold for $1437.50.

This is a very attractive coin at first glance but I am suspicious about that perfect "target" toning. Detail is at least AU-50 but the centers have a somewhat cleaned appearance; nothing obviously abrasive, just a slightly dull, washed-out look that suggests too much time in a dip. 10 years in an album after a dipping could produce toning like this.
If the coin were judged problem-free by PCGS or NGC I'd be much more likely to consider a purchase. I don't suppose the seller would agree to guarantee it would slab as problem-free? I'd pay extra for such a guarantee, or perhaps you can negotiate an agreement for a partial refund if it does come back with a "cleaned" result.
Could you get more photos, maybe with different lighting angles? If the coin shows some original luster that would make it much more appealing IMO.

I completely agree with Jaobler's opinion on this.

The details on this coin are at least AU-55 with a good shot at AU-58. However IMO it has been dipped and artificial re-toned.
