I'm not surprised that the sets are sold out, but the number or orders surprised me. I placed one order at 1:00 pm and then a second at 5:50pm. There is a difference of 55000+ between my two order numbers. That means the mint was processing in excess of 11000 orders an hour or about 180 orders a minute or 3 orders a second.
Not sure what the numbers really mean and whether those are good or bad numbers for an order processing system. Seems like the mint was processing plenty of orders, just not many of ours. Wonder if any of the big mint customers had an order process different than what is available to the public?
Most modern computer and network systems are "virtual" processors. Meaning many unique copies on an operating system share the same common set of hardware resources. Modern computers are that fast. Being virtual systems, more or less resources can be made available to any virtual machine on demand. Seems like with all the money the mint spends on computers, they should be able to temporarily increase network or computer processing resources to lessen the problems like we all had yesterday. But then sell out would have happened in one to two hours.

I'm assuming that those order numbers include items other than the 25th anniversary ASE set. Of course, I have no idea how many orders the mint typically receives in a day, so that amount may be miniscule compared to the 25th anniversary ASE set orders.

In very basic terms, with the design of most modern websites, the most likely 'choke' points where excessive traffic causes a system such as this to slow down and/or crash is: 1. The network bandwidth available. 2. The processing ability of the webservers/database server(s). 3. The bandwidth available between the webservers and the database(s).
The Mint would have to review logs to see where the bottleneck occurs most frequently and then increase throughput in the way of more bandwidth to/between the servers, or more/faster servers available to process requests.
Although it is also possible to have fast servers and plenty of bandwidth and still see slowness due to the code in the ordering system just being so bulky/poorly written that it still overwhelms the hardware simply by sending more data than necessary or sending data incorrectly.

I think the computer added up how many sets were sold then when 100000 sets were sold they started putting people on waitlist. I don't think you have anything room worry about. But I do feel a lot of orders will get canceled b.c of over ordering

Actually, if you look at the order history you'll see that one person paid $1,689.89 and the other "only" paid $589.89. I'm not sure how that worked, unless there was a "Make an Offer" option.

True..but...if YOU were ordering a 2011 proof set and couldn't get in after 10 tries would you keep trying or come back the next day? Most likely almost all orders were for the set...

next chapter: Customer service at 4:14 - Steve answers - hears the story and transfers me to HQ - busy signal hits my ear so I have to try again.  4:15 Yolanda at customer service answers, "I will pass this on to my supervisor and he will take care of it - call back next week." So I asked her why I was assured by the other reps I had called before - and gave her the names - that no one at customer service could help me and that my call must be transferred to HQ for an resolution? I said she was the first who never mentioned HQ. She said I could talk to a supervisor if I wanted (yes!). After 5 minutes she broke into the background music and said she was still trying. After 5 more minutes she interrupted the music again and said, Mr. Brewer, I can..." CLICK!  So at 4:33 I got hold of Patty in customer service. Another 10 minutes of relating the story (with the updated Yolanda chapter) etc., and she told me the supervisors have requested the info from HQ, and that there are other people with the same problem. I asked her how waiting until next week would impact me getting my order of 5 sets back since they were sold out yesterday and I fear/feared the longer the time passage, the harder it will be to get the sets back. She said to call back Wednesday. She said by then the supervisors will have been able to find the problem, figure out what had happened, and will have it resolved (whatever that means).  ...will Earle42 ever get his sets he ordered and paid for? ...will the mint spank their computer for stealing Earle's paid for (and verified with an order number by Customer Service) goods? Tune in next weeks folks when we continue the exciting adventure of ... "the Great 2011 Silver Eagle Computer Bandit!"

So you are telling me if I got 5 sets on 1 order I have to have them all graded? Are you sure they are not Ind. sealed within the Mints shipping box? That doesn't make since that they would ship them without being individually sealed. I am going to call tm that can't be right.

Does official US Mint gift wrapping count as a sealed set? Or is it the sealed shipping box plain and simple?

throwbackkid- NGC and PCGS are only going to accept the box they are SHIPPED in, tape still sealed for grading all five coins from a set with the 25th anniv. label. So you would have to send the sealed/taped box you receive in tact. If not, then only two of the five coins in the set will receive the 25th anniv. label. NGC and PCGS both confirmed this with a phone call today while I was in my local coin shop with the dealer I work with/buy from.
If you submit a sealed box from the mint with five sets inside you are going to get five sets graded. Not the best way to do this but those are their rules. You will have to put that sealed box in another box with your order form.

Well that just sucks because I wanted to keep one sealed. I just can't believe the mint doesn't indivually seal them. On a side not I see one set at $1200 and another for $800. No matter what happens it looks like some of us got the buy of the century:)

 We managed to get 2 sets that we wanted but the way we did it was a little different. Instead of logging right on to the website,which was impossible we went on through a back door, an advertizing link found right here in this thread. There was no way we were going to be able to access our account so we just purchased them each as guest. We tried 2 at atime but we were only able to buy them 1 at a time. One will be opened & admired, the other my son Vic wants to keep in OGP. It was not easy but with a little perseverance we got it done.
