When I was a kid I bought a Double Struck Indian cent. I just got it back from NGC and they slabbed it "Double Struck 2nd Strike 35% Off Center - Mint Error MS-63 BN". My question is does anyone have an idea of the correct value for the coin?

The value of the date without the error is $71 according to Numismedia. So I'd say that's a lower bound.

I have to say that I am not familiar with errors so I would not be sure of its value. I did look up on Heritage to see if there were any similar coins that the have sold. I did find two lots that might be remotely comparable and both of them sold for more that $800. I would guess that yours would be worth more because yours is more off center and in better condition than lot 12509. I have provided links to both of the coins. Amazing coin BTW! http://coins.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleN...&lotNo=12509http://coins.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleN...&lotNo=12511

Oh my I would have to say something north of $1000 would not be unreasonable for an monster error like that. You might want to contact Mike Byers, I would bet that he has handled a few of them.

That's a magnificent coin with great eye appeal - a real heart stopper. I agree that it's better than the two on Heritage. $1000 is not out of the question at all.

Stunning coin! $1,000 or more would not be out of the question.

Thanks for the comments - like I said I bought this when I was first working in Boston right out of school. It cost over $100 back then. But it has done better than the 1972 double die I bought about the same time for the same price.
I have always loved it but I am reaching the point when I may have to sell it.

I would contact Rick Snow and have him look at this coin for some perspective. It is beautiful and looks better than 63, perhaps the luster is not there, but obverse appears to have no distractions. Awesome coin. Hold on to that one until you find the right buyer looking to pay a worthy premium!

wowsers. I have 3 double struck Indians. One is an 1896 XF40, 2nd strike 90% off center. Another is an 1882 XF40, 2nd strike 10% off center. The last is an 1876 AU55. Prices go up a lot in MS. I'd say yours is worth about $1250. 1892 is a nice early 1890's date, not too common (but not too rare either) for major errors. But any major error on an Indian is exceptionally hard to come across in MS.

That is one of the coolest coins for my taste that I have seen in decades of collecting. If I hit the lottery, there will be a PM headed your way!
And since nobody asked...how much did smart kid swamperbob pay and when? I get the feeling there's a good story there.
Thanks for sharing.

I recommend sending a pic of that coin To Rick Snow at rick @ indiacent.com He is a member of my coin club here in Tucson AZ. I believe that he has the most knowledge of Indian Head cents.

OneBowl Not much of a story here - I bought it when I first became a vest pocket dealer after college and the Navy. I began working in Boston and there were many more coins available in that market than in my home town. I got it at a dealer auction about 1970-1972 for just over $100. At the time I probably paid far too much but I loved it and basically entered a BUY BID. Re-sale was not on my mind at all. I did think it would make a great logo if I ever opened a shop.

Sweet error! I really love seeing the older errors from 18th and 19th century coinage, some of the double strikes and capped bockerages are amazing! Your coin is outstanding - a great pick! Rick Snow as stated before, he is a friend of mine, and "go-to" guy when a question arrises on Indian cent values or varieties, Rick is an honest dealer, one of the best in the business. Jack Beymer is the premier dealer in 18th and 19th century type coin errors, he has handled just about all of them and is a market maker, he would be the best resource for getting a current market place value on it, and he would also be able to tell you the best way to sell it, auction (which one), private sale, etc. Jack has a very large want list from his error collectors, many will pay top dollar for the right one!
