I stand corrected in the term "Fine Silver". It was always explained to me previously that the term "fine" was used to express the percent of silver in something....learned something new today.

I agree that is a quite vague term.... "fine"...kinda like "fine jewelery", "fine dining"...but it is weirdly specific with silver...

What I think the term " Fine " is referring to in Eagle coins though is that the term Fine is replacing the word pure.....for a one ounce Gold Eagle is stamped 1oz Fine Gold...yet is only 91.7% gold in its alloy. By no measure is 91.7 percent gold considered Fine, yet the coins are plainly marked as such! What it is translating to is that "in this coin is one ounce of pure gold" regardless of what alloy it is made of. So...if....and I say IF these terms in respect to American Eagle coins are interchangeable between metals....then yes a silver coin could be a 90% coin and still labeled as Fine as long as it CONTAINED one ounce of silver within it!

Gold would be gold....and....silver would be silver. To repeat: key the last few words: Quote:

Sterling silver has a defined silver content Fine silver has a defined silver content ...and Quote: then yes a silver coin could be a 90% coin and still labeled as Fine as long as it CONTAINED one ounce of silver within it! Nope...the weight of the coin would weigh x and that x to be called fine SILVER would have to be an ounce (actually 0.001 over an ounce)...too take it to extremes you could have a 5 ounce coin with one ounce of pure silver in it and call it "fine silver"?

Becomes very misleading when compairing Gold and Silver Eagle Coins though wouldn't you say?
As for a five ounce coin...based on how the Gold Eagle is marked....it could be marked one ounce fine silver yes...but not 5 oz fine.

In an effort to get back on topic this is a statement from John Maben...CEO of Modern Coin Mart which is a MAJOR coin company...in regards to the % of 70's from these sets (PCGS) Quote: Just submitted 51 fresh sets via bulk out of 102 coins got 6 70's. Wow...that sucks...6%

Looks like my idea created quite the firestorm In regards to the modern coin mart submission holy you know what. Not even 6 percent is miserable. I wonder what those will be priced since theyre certainly eating cost on that order

I lean the other direction and think it's wonderful for TPGs to tighten up on the 70s.

I see where unholyroller is getting confused, and it is confusing. ASE is minted in Fine Silver, and is 99.9% fine. US silver coins are minted in Coin Silver and are 90% fine. I have a business card case (gift from work) from Tiffany's in Sterling Silver, and you guessed it -- it's 92.5% fine. All 6 things are correct.

Getting back to the SF sets, does anyone know how to find out how many Mercanti signed sets there are? Is there a POP report for mercanti labels? Neither TPG acknowledges the different labels (trolly label, SF bridge, flag, etc....) Is it my impression or are the Mercanti signed coins selling for more. Do you think the Mercanti's will be more valuable in the future?

The special labels do generally get more. As far as I know the signature is only offered on the PCGS first strikes so there cant be anymore than are in the first strike pop, but not all of those will have it either. I dont know of anyway to get a true number on them but probably 50-75% of the first strikes have it if I had to guess. Most of the dealers get it with the first strike labels, but I think its only available for bulk orders so individuals wont get it if they submit for it from PCGS anyway.
Could be way off but thats my understanding

I would agree with your FS theory. Most likely the Mercanti labels make up most of the FS group so, going on that, they should sell for less than the Flag labels.

Hmmm lack of supply doesn't in itself create demand.

I just got off the Phone with PCGS regarding my Submission of 6 sets 2012 American Eagle "S" Proofs and Reverse Proof. They sent me an email asking if I wanted Multiholders or not. They Have had them for 3 weeks now so not sure why they waited so long to ask? I called and denied the multi holder, then asked why they would offer them when their own Web site does not recognize them. If you go to register them, I would think that 1 Number would automatically recognize the other coin in the holder, but that is not the case you must register each coin separately. He also went on to say that I was The Only 1 he has talked to that didn't want Multiholders.
