Quote: I see a couple pin holes of shiny in the frosted parts but very minor. Does this affect the grade? It does in the sense they couldnt be 70s but could probably still be 69s it sounds like. If you like them thats all that really matters

Got mine today and they look great! Not as spectacular as the 5-coin sets from last year but still very happy nonetheless. I have one more set coming - I put an order in on the last day. My question is... Is it worth it to sell one at this point? I checked ebay and it doesn't seem that unsealed sets are going for much more than 180. I could get my money back but...at this point, would rather hang onto a set or cancel the last one than go through the hassle of selling for a small profit. Thoughts?

At the moment its not worth trying to resell a set on ebay. The question is will there be a spike in interest at some point like the 2011 army half saw a few months ago. It could improve in a few months since everyone who bought the sets just to sell all have them listed on ebay right now driving the price down. Theres no assurance it will ever go up but if you dont need the money taking a chance keeping 1 could be worth it. As long as the price at least holds the current level you wouldnt really lose any money and if there is a spike you cant reorder something you canceled. I canceled a couple of mine but I kept the order in tact for 2 figuring its worth a shot

@basebal21 - I agree; will probably keep the 3rd set for the reasons you lay out AND the fact that the RP AND the S are one of the lowest mintage #'s of ASE's. Should help once the auctions dry up and collectors decide they need to fill in the gaps.

basebal21, This year, if you count up all the variations of 2012 ASE, NGC has graded a tad over half a million coins. PCGS has graded a fraction of that. Earlier PCGS had a bigger share of the market, but lately NGC has been grading moreof the recent coins. It doesn't hurt that outfits such as MCM and Paradise Mint are just down the road from NGC. In addition, NGC processes most coins quicker than PCGS. NGC and PCGS charge he same fee for modern, $14. However, NGC ER cost $20, while PCGS charges $32 for FS. I think that NGC pricing is even more flexible for bulk submitters, so the dealers like them. Plus they are willing to create all those different labels, so the dealers like them even more. I also think that NGC slabs simply look better. The translucent PCGS slabs look and feel cheap.

LX, you raise an interesting point (to me). Irrespective of grading companies and such, what is the total count of ASEs, individually AND in separate products if purchased directly from the US Mint? I.e,: 1. If you wanted a single instance of each version of the 2012 ASE, what would the list be? 2. If you wanted a complete collection of one each of all the US mint products that include ASEs, what would you end up with? I'm tired and a bit lazy, and I think someone may be writing a book on this anyway, so I'll just let them answer. :)

I do like the black NGC holder look but like the size and feel of the PCGS one better. Both do have the special labels but I'm sure its cheaper for NGCs. I will say NGC has put out some good looking labels in the past but I cant get over how bad that top 100 series is they just started I actually wasnt aware MCM was so close to NGC, fun little fact, but that would partially explain why they see to always have way more NGC coins than PCGS Quote:I agree; will probably keep the 3rd set for the reasons you lay out AND the fact that the RP AND the S are one of the lowest mintage #'s of ASE's Heres to hoping a spike happens so a sale or two can pay for the keeper sets, but not until our sets have arrived of course

Quote:1. If you wanted a single instance of each version of the 2012 ASE, what would the list be? Not that many. 1) Bullion ASE2) W Proof ASE3) W Uncirculated ASE4) S Proof ASE5) S Rev Proof ASENGC (and PCGS) also pedigrees the following: 1a) Bullion ASE struck at WP 1b) Bullion ASE struck at SF 4b) S Proof ASE from MAH Set Not sure if there will be a separate pedigree: 3a) W Uncirculated ASE from annual dollar set On top of that, there are mildly and completely meaningless permutations of labels such as FS, ER, Frosty the Snowman label, etc. Quote: 2. If you wanted a complete collection of one each of all the US mint products that include ASEs, what would you end up with? One massive American Express bill, that's what. I Think that at the end of last year someone calculated the price of all US Mint numismatic products from last year (not including bullion) and it came to somewhere around $27K.

Got a set today. I'm happy with the RP but the reg proof has a spot on the back :( and a smudge on the front like it wasn't handled correctly :(

@stev18: I hope that the smudge is just on the capsule, not the coin. But I'm sure you checked that already. :( @LX: Thanks, I figured it was around 5 or 6 ASEs for the year. That's more than most years but less than 2011. :) Either way, being a huge fan of the ASE design, I like it. However, I do worry that all these varieties will hurt the overall series much like the ultra rare/parallel/mirror/etc. phenomenon of the late 1990's and early 2000's hurt the baseball card industry/market. Of course, we also dealt with a general economy crash at the same time. It seems that interest tailed off a bit after last year's anniversary offering. Will be interesting to see what they come up with next year.

I am still waiting for a fully brilliant proof version. I love the proofs of the 1930s through 1964 and would love to see the ASE rendered fully brilliant.

You better check your order status again - one of my orders was supposed to ship Oct31, then it went forward to Sep28 and now it's gone back to Oct31... They really are morons.
