Easy choice for me here! Can't stand the Franklin half design. Due to the untimely death of President Kennedy, this ended up being only a 15 year design, for which I am grateful. By the way, just read this thread all the way through for the first time; need to make a correction.

Quote:
Trivia: does anyone know why the eagle is so tiny of that series? It is because B. Franklin hated the eagle as a national symbol.
He advocated the turkey as our national bird. It is at least for one day a year!

I read that the tiny Eagle appears on the reverse because it is mandated by US law that an Eagle appear on the reverse of all coin denominations twenty five cents and up. Since Franklin is often associated with Philadelphia and the Liberty Bell, the powers that be wanted the Liberty Bell on the reverse to be the focal point. Because of the law the Eagle had to be added as an afterthought. Truly ugly reverse design, IMO.

Least Favorite: The 1st issue Native American dollars (although the proposed 2nd issue looks nice)

Favorite: Sacagawea dollar Series (with old design). Cant beat a BU gold sac with strong eagle detail, proof like surfaces, and dark gold rim toning.

My least favorite has to be the Matron Head large cent. A tree-trunk neck and more masculine features than most men do not a flattering image of Lady Liberty make.

The new Jefferson faces, 2009 Sacagawea, presidential dollars--pretty much anything made in the last few years--come in a close second.

Also, the upcoming National Parks quarter series will probably not be ugly, but it will likely be horrifically boring. This can be forgiven by replacing George Washington with Theodore Roosevelt on the obverse as was recommended by the CCAC, but I doubt this will happen. Alternately, all could be forgiven by choosing LP12 for the new penny reverse, but I don't see this happening either. It hearkens back to the days of our attractive coinage too much for the tastes of the current mint.

Of the modern US coinage it has to be the SBA...don't like the design; don't like the color.

I don't like the prez dollars. I might have given them a chance had it not been for the edge lettering.

Least favorites: the Roosevelt dime because it replaced my personal favorite design... SBA dollar comes in a close second.

Favorites: Mercury dime, Walking Liberty half

Worst changes in Reverse Designs:

Lincoln Cent; Wheat Ear Reverse changed to Lincoln Memorial Reverse

Standing Liberty quarter; Type 1 (low Eagle, no stars)
changed to Type 2 (high Eagle, stars below)

Buffalo nickel; Type 1 (bison on mound) changed to
Type 2 (bison on flat line)

Shield nickel; Rays removed in 1867

Sacagawea dollar; 2000-2008 Eagle Reverse changed to
2009-up Native American annual reverse designs

Dishonorable mention: Many State Quarter reverses,
when compared to the excellent 1932-98 Eagle Reverse!

I hate the Wyoming reverse. It has to be the ugliest coin the mint has ever made.

The Florida State Quarter Reverse:
A total mis-mash of random design elements.

The bucking horse logo of the Wyoming Quarter has been used on their
license plates for decades, so that logo is very well known in the Rocky Mountain region of the U.S..

Not that it was the best choice to use for a State Quarter Reverse,
especially for a State that includes Devils Tower and Old Faithful.

(both of which are all-too-obvious candidates for National Park Quarter reverses!)

My least favorites are probably the Roosevelt dime and the obverse of the 2005 Jefferson nickel.

The reverse of the bicentennial Ike dollar has always been one of my favorites.

SBA Dollar - a complete bust all the way around. No one gave this one any thought in design or functionality and all the pres dollars.

My favorite coin has to be the Walking Liberty half - a classic design.
