I'll say VF-25, possibly 30. Scrapes on neck, cheek and right obverse field might detail this.

For XF I believe the "curl near ear" needs to be fully expressed? Not sure. Anyhow, I say VF35.

For XF I believe the "curl near ear" needs to be fully expressed? old coppers do not follow all the markers for a grade due to striking issues as well planchet issues coming from England. you must look at the coin in total when assessing a grade on these. this one is showing weakness from k5-k10 on the reverse. also around the L in LIBERTY and some of the flatness in the hair behind the face is from strike as well as circulation wear. it takes a good eye and knowledge these inherent issues to determine the difference. look at the sharpest devices such as the drape and date as well as the bust and cheek which in this case is exhibiting very little wear i can tell everyone it graded straight so FROG you missed it again  |

I think it's a VF35, but I'm betting on ANACS going the other way and calling it too low VF20 maybe?

JMHO, but I'd leave this one in the ANACS slab. I do think it would straight grade, but I don't think it would cross over at 40.
Tough coin to find without problems. Yours is a decent example. You are absolutely right on the planchet issues for these critters.
The last plain 4 no stem I handled was a couple weeks before the world turned upside down with COVID. It was a MS-63RB, and I hunted for one for several years for my client. Almost every one I found looked like it had been used for skeet shooting.
