My children found a penny that clearly shows the date as 1997, but the back is that of a Wheat penny. Any thoughts on what this is or how it got this way? This is not a joke.

Guessing this is a Magician's coin or some sort. Can you show us closeups of the edge (straight-on), and the field where it meets the rim on both sides, please.

Was a normal Wheat penny, but someone carved a different date on it. The obverse design looks completely normal for a late 1950's Wheat cent and the 9 is slightly larger, so I assume just a 5 carved into a 9.

If they did carve the number which I assume it's the first 9 in date would make date 1597 which is impossible.

Altered coin in some manner. Good suggestions already given on the method.

Looks like legitimate wheatie where the second 9 has been altered.
By increasing the size, you can see the difference in the two 9's.
No value but worth keeping as novelty coin.

Yes, an altered coin. A fun curiosity to hold onto.

Altered date seems to be the most likely explanation. Here is the best I can do with the OP's current pic:

It may have been a 1917 cent?

Just added a larger '9' onto the coin. To bad it may have been a DDO for that year:

Now just a junk coin.
