Is-This-Machine-Doubling?

Is-This-Machine-Doubling?

Pretty much all of the text is "bolded" on the coin on the right. Especially noticeable on "In God We Trust," "United States of America," "E Pluribus Unum" and the FG initials. These coins have been sitting in my room for about 8-10 years, and I just noticed the differences between the coins.

Thanks!

The coins really do seem to have some differences.

The stars on the obverse are quite different but I would guess that is just the difference between an early and a late die state.

It also looks like a bit of the rim/trim is missing above the E on the obverse.

Thanks Buddy for your take on the coin. I didn't notice the missing part of the rim above the E.

These coins have been in a holder dated 1993 from Littleton Coin Company, if that means anything significant.

Welcome!

Wow, the coin on the right almost looks as though it has die rust. I would agree with Die Deterioration, most likely the reason Littleton sent them to you. Just a tip, don't ever buy anything from them.

Thanks Drsandman, I didn't actually buy the coins. They were a gift and I happened to notice the coin while looking at my coin stash.

Could you tell me what die rust is?

It says on the package "mint set." I guess it still could be circulation wear

Suomi,

Check out the area on the reverse, between R in DOLLAR and the last A in AMERICA. It seems rough and pitted. In the old days, they would store leftover dies (the obverses still without a date punched) and pull them out the next year. Some of them would contain rust.

To my knowledge, die rust is most often found on Indian Head cents and Morgan dollars. You can probably find better examples on the web, but a quick search revealed this Morgan dollar variety ( VAM).

Also, check out this example of Die Deterioration:

Thanks for the info on die rust, I'll have to check out the coin later. I'm still unsure what to call the right coin. I guess Die Deterioration?

I also see what appears to be an "extra" rim on the outside of the right coin, on the obverse. I would enjoy better pictures of the coin on the right myself.

There are plenty of people on this forum much more knowledgeable than I.

Alright, I'll try to get a better picture tomorrow. I scanned the coins the first time and I hope I can get a better picture

I believe the "extra rim" is the outline of the coin holder

Suomi -- while circulation wear is a possibility I would think that the tallest devices would show the most wear and that would probably be the hair in this case. If the hair was worn flat as well as the stars then that would look more like circulation wear (to me, anyway).

Drsandman2 Thanks for the good information on die rust.

So much to learn ...
