Forgive me for the sub-par photography, but I'm pretty sure this is a '21D Mercury dime.

Does this coin look legit to you?

The coin appears to exhibit some significant damage ... agreed that it appears to be a Denver mint coin but the date is not confirmed based on your photographs.

Two quick tips to hopefully help with the photography ...

1. Take the image directly over the coin ... that is at a 90 degree angle. No tilting allowed.

2. Crop the background so the coin fills the posted image ... eliminate all the un-needed background.

Hoping for you this is a 1921-D Mercury dime ... that is certainly a key date in the series.

"directly over" would be parallel to the coin. A 90 degree angle is a right angle, like the corner of a square.

Okay. I think this one show the date pretty well.

It's still a bit blurry. My camera has a hard time focusing on penny and dime sized coins.

Looks too ugly to be a fake, unless it's a double-bluff and that's exactly what the fakers want us to think... but that way leads to madness.

I'm willing to bet you made a smart purchase on a great hole filler.

I didn't purchase anything! I got this one at work for face value! It was in a roll of dimes!

I govern much of my life by the Sagan Standard:

Not the slightest bit of disrespect intended, but a '21-D Mercury in a roll of dimes, I think, would meet anyone's standard of an "extraordinary claim." To those who know best; our evidence is good, but is it yet extraordinary?

I'm a dime magnet, I tell ya! Quarters have come to a standstill but the dimes are still rollin' my way!

I still can't believe I found a semi-key date Merc! She's a bit rough, but I'm not complaining!

With a mintage of a million? I'll believe it was in a roll.

So far I've found two 2000-P nickels from vending machines and rolls, with a mintage of 3,000,000, so I know you can find rare dates with some luck - after all, they have to pop up at some point...

No offense taken. I didn't realize what I had until I arrived at home and checked my Red Book.

Erm....not sure what else to say.

Congrats ... good find

I think this happens more than many people think.

I help out at local coin shops, and I am amazed at what people bring in from getting in change or working cash registers.

Several months ago a guy comes in with two .. yes two 1909 S vdb, laid them on the counter in front of me and ask if these were what he thought they were. Said he just got them in change at the Winn Dixie, half mile from the shop. My boss went to the Winn Dixie a little later and ask the checkout if she heard of a guy getting some old pennies .. and she said yes .. he seemed happy to get them. The guy bringing them to the store did not want to sell them .. just wanting us to check them out.

Over a year ago I picked up my 1921 D walking liberty about the same way .. guy got a bunch of half dollars in change and brought them in.

I never get rare coins in change, but I do get wheat cents, a few silver coins and War Nickels. The last War Nickel I got from Wendy's ... it was very nice... maybe AU.

This is just a small town in Florida .... can you imagine what happens in the rest of the world.
