I got the grades back from my Baltimore submission to PCGS, and I thought I'd celebrate with a guess the grade. A bit of explanation. I was a bit nervous about this submission due to one coin. Some time ago, I had picked up a 1913 Matte Proof Lincoln Cent in an old ANACS holder for a bargain price. It was an impulse buy. I know nothing about these, except that I was getting a good price if the coin panned out. Then, I lived with buyer's potential remorse: Was it really a proof? Was it really un-messed-with? Was it really the grade ANACS thought? And so on. Well, I will tell you that it graded problem-free at PCGS. And I'm celebrating, so yes, it did grade as a matte proof strike. So without further ado, here he is for your grading pleasure. Since I know so little about these, I'd sure appreciate any comments on how you came to your grade. Some specks here and there. I'd grade it PR-65.

Oh my that is a beauty. I'll say PR-66, possibly PR-67... what a glorious beard on Lincoln! (I'm the same as you, I know very little about matte proofs but I've always wanted one!)

Aside from the small scratch in thw right obverse field, a very clean coin, though I think that scratch and some speck may have cost it a point. I think it graded PR-65.

PR66RD and a very nice piece Liz! An old friend of mine from Denver, Colorado wrote a small pamphlet on Matte Proof books, Leonard Albrecht, you can still find them at used book dealers sometimes, also Kevin Flynn has a nice book on Lincoln Matte Proofs I just picked up, that would've put your mind to rest on the question of - Is it really a proof? I'd say in an old ANACS holder that may have been a tougher call, as they didn't have the clearest plastic and the edges are hidden, but this is one superb looking Matte proof Lincoln Cent! Just a couple of tiny flyspecks of carbon spotting is all I see, gorgeous color and patina!

64, scratch above the date is gonna hurt, along with the spotting. Still a very nice coin.

Nice wheatie! Huge jump between PR63 and PR65, I'll wish you the best and stake out the middle with PR64. RB, maybe?

Old White ANACS holders are quite collectible in their own rights. Unless it jumped significantly in PCGS grading over the ANACS adding significant value to the coin, you may have been better standing pat.
The coin itself is a real stunner. Absolutely beautiful color and the detail is incredible. I will say PR63.

I go out of my way to cherry pick varieties in the old ANACS holders (especially the gold labels). ANACS was a the top of their game then IMHO & you can find some really nice coins in those holders. Mine are staying in them.

This wheatie is in remarkable condition for being 101 years old.
I don't have any experience with these matte proof coins so I won't even attempt a grade. I'm curious at to what it graded though.
