It is not a doubled die: Your coin is machine doubled. The 1968-1972 cents are full of machine doubled examples.

The "B" probably took a hit, or is simply a die chip that got ran over. As for the 1969-S, its simply Machine Doubling through and through. Add in 45 years of circulation and the coin has things happen to it that could make it look like anything and question your analytical approach. A doubled die will add to the original devices, not scrape them away. Most doubled dies will have exceptional thickness or have things doubled. If you look at the example, that is how the HAMMERING DIE looks like when it hits the coin. Since the DIE looks like that, most examples (coins) from that die should look very similar. Thats what you should see for a 1969-S DDO to ring that money bell. I say this. If you see a DDO or DDRR, it should be like a slap in the face. An eye opener. If you have to guess yourself, then the odds increase dramtically that it is not. In the end education about these varieties is key, and understanding what they look like. For those having a hard time recognizing a key DDO or DDR, simply print a picture of one, and slap it in a binder. Do a pic of 1955, 1969-S, 1972 (all 9 varieties) and any others that you are focusing on. In that same binder you can throw the CAM's and WAM's and have a quick reference book that will assist you in the times of need. Of course, many of us are here to either cheer or debunk, depending on the coin itself. As always - continued Happy Hunting !

The 1969-S seams like a extremely common date coin for the md or vlds to be thought of as a DDO. Also I see on ebay daily there are always people trying to sell them mislabeled? Something about this date? you can count all the md out number the actual correct listings http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trk...=0&_from=R40

Well, it's back to "Error Coin School" for me..... I had just read an article that I thought helped me understand the difference between MD and DD. Back to my coin studies now.... ;-)
However, I did figure out the difference between a large date and small date 1982 and found my first small date last night! That's progress!

It's a learning process my friend - I'm on the learning curve too and enjoying it. Nothing like getting the blood flowing when you think you've got something (happens often lately). It might make the realization of a lesser find a little bitter if you let it, but otherwise, just another step closer to getting more right on the first try. PS Don't forget you owe me a list.

Note that no one laughed. I confess that I found one similar to yours and my heart skipped a beat and I lost track of time for a second or two. Then, of course, my training kicked in and I knew it was just MD. But for a moment....

I didn't really think you'd laugh, but as Rackster pointed out, if you'd seen my reaction when I found it, you probably would have! ;-) This forum is great because it's members are great people! I totally appreciate the education I'm getting here from you all! Thanks!

Quote: the good news is - your images are pretty good. THAT is what had me giggling. We are all here to learn, don't sweat it, it took me a while to be able to see MD and Die Deterioration not as doubling.
