I am in the process of going through 5,000. Mercury dimes I purchased. mostly 40's and ave circs. I think this one is a 16-D, but I am not as familiar with the MM and positions. The reverse seems slightly rotated. Opinions greatly appreciated as always! I know it is low grade, but it might be a 16-d? I can put more pics up, I am rushing out of work so threw this up on the fly.

It looks like a "D" to me.

If you think it is a 16-D, then send it in to ANACS and remove all doubts. This is one of those coins that you can't really tell if it's the real deal or not. The mint mark kinda looks like a "D" but it could also be a worn down "S".
Besides, to market a key date low grade coin like that, it will have to be slabbed anyway.
The coin is AG3 to me. 16-D? I don't know.

The shape of what's left of the "D" looks correct, and its wear into the edge being commeasurate with the rest of the coin is a vaidating factor, as is the random manner in which it was found. I concur with the above comment that certifying it would be worthwhile, since it has been a widely forged issue.

I know there would be no interest if it was not slabbed and authenticated, just wanted some other opinions.
If the concensus is better than a 50/50 shot at it being genuine I might bring it to the Manchester NH coin show Oct 10/11. ANACS will be on site accepting submissions.
any other opinions?

The MM position is correct ... unable to judge by the top remnants of the MM 'D" or "S".
It could be a great score ... agreed that I would submit to ANACS at the upcoming show.
Looking forward to an update.

The D in this level of wear should have a crescent "half moon" shape to it. If you ask me, you scored a 16-D. Yup, ANACS.

Looks like a D to me. Needs to be slabbed to be marketable.

Looks better than a 50-50 shot to me. If you can attend an area coin show, wherein there's a reputable grading service present, I've found that they will often render an on-site opinion. Larry Briggs of SEGS has often done this for me. With low-grade or problem coins, as this one is, I ask for a genuine-only certification.

It looks like a Denver mintmark to me. Good luck on your submission! I can't wait to see the results.

Thanks for everyone's opinions and help! I will bring it to the Manchester NH show on the 11th along with a couple other coins. Here is the first group of the 5,000 lot. I have to take it in partials since my last name is not Buffet.

I'll go so far as to say I find the look sufficiently encouraging to risk the cost of having it authenticated.
