So my wife, oldest son and I were out in a driving rainstorm yesterday. My son and I ran into Best Buy and my wife went to the local thrift store looking for bargains. When we met back up at the car, she told me she had found 6 Christmas style houses that would be just perfect for my Hallmark Lionel train ornament display that I set up every Christmas. This is a lot of trains - 19 years worth - many years with 3 or more cars (what can I say, I'm a collector at heart). Our deal has been that I get to put up the trains if she can "soften them" with a little village so it doesn't just look like a rail yard. Trying to be a good husband, I went back in to help her carry them to the register. Anyway, these houses end up being buy one, get two free - apparently, even thrift stores have after Christmas clearance. $1.07 with tax. She throws down a dollar bill, a nickel and two brown looking pennies. Now, I've gotten pretty good at spotting copper just by look, and although my reading vision has gotten to the point where I can't see the dates well, I grab them and substitute a nickel. "Are those old ones?" she asked. "Maybe", I replied. She grabbed the nickel and threw down two shield pennies. "Are those ok to spend?". "Yes" I said. Slight disappointment that any chance for more was lost since I wouldn't be getting Three Cents back in change, but I let it go. They were a 1978 and 1978-D. Into the copper stash! And that's what it's like to live with a coin collector! p.s. My wife is a saint... <<<Moved by Tights24 to a more appropriate forum>>>

Love the story! It's got to the point that Mu wife has a secret stash of coins to keep for me and always lets me go through her change before she spends it. Great wife!

When they first started making the Lionel ornaments, it was just a locomotive and it was supposed to be a series of 12 I believe. I think Hallmark realized the money "train" these represented and I can't seem to stop buying them! I did stop for awhile but then I discovered that past years were available pretty cheap on ebay and so here I am collecting them again. I have managed to not buy the limited edition and miniature ones at least.

My wife is so used to me, she won't use pennies as change for fear of spending one I want. LOL

I'm the collector in my house and I never use coins to pay for a purchase. However, my son does even though he knows I would prefer him to keep them until I've looked at them.

What's it like to live with a coin collector? I'll tell you what it's like to live with a coin collector! Chute got careless with his password, and now I'm in charge of this thing. Not long ago I was going into labor. My water broke, and it was time to head for the hospital. You know what he says to me? You know what he says to me? "Not now Honey, you can deliver at home. The coin auction is about to begin." Heck with that! I got up to call a taxi, and do you know what he says to me? You know what he says to me? He says, "Honey, as long as you're up will you bring me that stack of reference books?" That, is what it is like to live with a coin collector. Let me tell you girls something. When it comes to settling down, you need to know two things about his family. One, did any of cousins marry? And two, were there any coin collectors? But I fixed his little red wagon. I asked him how much he paid for all those coins and stuff. He told me about $50. Well, I put an ad in Craigs List, and got $75 for all that junk. And his study den? Now it's the baby's room!
