redcentcollector ... IMHO, a full LIBERTY should be discernable on a fine Indian. That said, I've seen PCGS graded fines that lacked a full LIBERTY. That's why I posed this question. I'm curious to see how your purchase fares.

redcentcollector, Did I read you correctly that you have a full set from 1793 to 1909? That would be awesome. Ya know it really doesn't really bother me to have an AG03 1877, it's still desirable and easy to resell, and I tend to buy what's available at the time. I saw the 1909-S in a lower grade at a decent price and could afford it, and grabbed it. Lower grades of those slabbed don't come around all that often. There's a lot of coins I want, and not getting any younger. The less I spend, the more of others I can buy Speak of the I just saw this and pounced. I think that's a good price. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1908-S-1C-I...047675.l2557ExoGuy, Yea, Not much full LIBERTY on mine. I can see the tops of a couple of letters. I think my obverse is actually more like VG08, and the reverse is VG10. Still no problem, and in a righteous holder, will never(shouldn't really say never)be upside down in it.

Ohhh no I wish!! I am building a set from 1793 to 1909. I am far far from the finish line.
I still have the big boys to buy. The 1793 in a couple of variations (Ex: Chain Cent America), the rare 1799 and the 1804. And a bunch of other ones as well. I will get there one day. I could buy one of the 3 mentioned above (Right now and another maybe once every few years) but waiting for the right coin at the right price.....Ebay is crazy high prices for the very rare coins. I believe patience is key and some places like Heritage auctions would be a better place to buy such coins.
There are of course many very rare expensive ones I will NEVER own like say the 1793 Strawberry Leaf or stuff like that. Those are way beyond my budget. I am in my mid 30's so I hopefully still have a long time to get as far as I can with my set.

Oh yea, mid 30's, that's the best thing you said so far. I collected as a kid, but recently, 2 years ago, got interested again as my son got older. He's 7 now and I'm 59. So it's not like I can't buy green banannas or anything, but can't be too picky. Also I plan to retire in a couple of years, so it's "buying time" now while I have an income. Might be selling time later That's great you are young, and you'll be able to accomplish a lot. Check out the grading forum, there's a few of us copper collectors over there.

Congrats! I'm fortunate enough to own two. I believe I bought my first one off Fox Valley coin auction about 17 years ago, the second one escapes me.

And what a key it is! A lot of us are missing that one, including myself.

Nice coin, I'd call it a VG-8. In my opinion at F-12 it is overgraded.

I see a lot of us are questioning the grade, so here's my Two Cents: Obverse: VG-10 Although there may not be a combination of two full letters in LIBERTY, there is just a hint of two. However, there are more diagnostics to grading the obverse than just the letters in LIBERTY. For example, the detail in the feathers is better than a VG-8 (but not F-12). Reverse: F-12 Solid for the grade. Overall, I think because of the coin being a key date, they gave it the benefit of the doubt and slabbed it accordingly.

..Looking at the coin through the plastic it looks F-12 to me, Congrats, redcentcollector.. Ed.. I agree with you, a AG-3 1877 Indian would be great for our set too...if we could even afford one of those.

I feel your pain took me a long (been saving for for almost a year) while to save up funds to be able to buy one and same goes if I buy one of the ''big boys'' (1793, 1799, 1804 and 1856 flying eagle).
As far as the ''big boys'' go it will be year between purchases. And I will most likely start with a PCGS VG-08 1793 chain cent America (Simply can't afford a higher grade than that). Love that coin!!

Nice looking 77 Also one I need. I never really tried to do a set of Indian Head cents. I just buy them when they come along, I think I need 5 or 6 more. I hope a 77 comes along ...like that one
