It's been almost 17 years since I started this thread and wow, we are at over 2 million views. I had no idea I was going to stimulate this much roll searching for silver in halves when I started this.
I'm glad to see so many have found silver and they are still out there!
My own roll searching of halves has gone to almost nothing in the past few years. Banks just don't have them, and it does not seem customers are bringing in many anymore. I am lucky to get $2 in halves lately. I have been skunked too many times by ordering boxes, so I always have preferred customer wrapped rolls.
The last box I ordered was the worst box I ever searched. Many coins were marked on obverse, reverse or sides with different colors (red, blue, black), meaning the coins had been searched multiple times at this point. There was not a single keeper in the entire box, even examining for the varieties that are not widely searched for. No silver, not a single NIFC, no proofs, just nothing.
More recently I have been searching through modern dollars, with better results, but there is no chance of silver there.

Nice finds TomM and pound foolish congrats Well I have not been hunting as much lately however when I do it has been a very very slow go. I am getting halves to search but no silver for the most part. Yesterday the slump came to an end got these two pieces from different banks.

In the last week I lost a brother and my job (job wise I'll land on my feet, and it's absolutely for the better), and just haven't had the motivation to do anything "coiny". Finally got a few moments of free time yesterday to check in at the nearby branch where I've been finding 40% halves and what do you know, the customer who has been bringing those rolls had cashed in another $170. Man did it feel good to have a small win - there were 48(!!!) 40%ers in there! To date, the total from $470 in that one customer's rolls is a whopping 97 40% silver Kennedy halves! Here's yesterday's 48-coin haul.I am simply gobsmacked.

The customer is doing this on a regular basis. Have you considered asking the tellers at that bank to inform that customer they are cashing valuable coins at face value? Tellers have told me some customers don't seem to care when they are given that information. But I think it would be the kind thing to do.

Yeah, in fact the second time I asked the teller to inform this customer that so many valuable coins are being cashed in at face value.and on this third trip, the teller informed me that this customer was only culling 90% silvers fully aware that the 1965-1970 coins are 40% silver. I left my number with the teller this time around to pass along to the customer so I might just grab these directly. Either way I feel good about knowing this isn't someone who is totally unaware of what they're doing. Thanks for pointing that out - hopeful I might even get a chance to buy some of the 90%ers if they're willing to part with them at spot.
