Quote: As for the armored car companies, I think it is far more likely people inside see or hear the silver and pocket it. I have had numerous rolls obviously opened and coins taken from them. I suspect silver was taken, so there are likely people in these companies that hunt silver too. That's terrible if you're getting short rolls in your boxes. I think I'd let my bank manager know about that.

Yes definitely alert the bank manager or a helpful teller. I got $10 back when my box was missing a roll. She even insisted on letting her know when they short me coins from rolls as well. I don't mind loosing 50c here and there, but if your loosing rolls, speak up! It may just pay off.

Obla- As I understand it, the armored carriers (brinks etc) act as coin distributors for the Fed. They bring in loose coins to their warehouses and put them through machines that sort and roll them. They then box them and ship them to banks. People in these warehouses have access to the coins. My point is that there is a small number of silver coins out there (in relation to the coin supply) and there are a lot of people with access from deposit to the point when you get them. Not to mention the people searching that dump large amounts of clad. I don't think the carriers have a machine to pull silver. Keep trying, you never know what you will find or when it will turn around.

6 box total for the week - 14 40%'s. No 90's.
As for my boxes and rolls being opened, I have alerted my bank manager and brought her examples. They have alerted their loss prevention and are pursuing the thief. We open boxes together now.

I bought two rolls from the bank last Friday and found.....nothing. Several Bicentennials, lots of 80's and 90's coins. Went to the bank today and found.....a 2007 D. Not the greatest find, but as I understand it, these were never released for circulation, is that correct?

thanks for the info nobis...
it does just seem to defy the odds, though. I mean seriously, my FIRST 8 boxes ever yield not a single silver?

Syaoran - Yes your correct. 2007 was not intended for circulation. They minted 2,400,000 that year of P&D.

@sdcoinguy - if a bank I had accounts with told me that, I would not only walk in speak to the manager, close the accounts, I'd also setup a blog about it, link that all over the internet as well as notify the local newspaper. $35 in solid pennies is way too much of a margin of error.

This really isn't a "find" to most of you guys but it kind of relates to this thread and I thought I would share. My sweet great-aunt knows I love coins so she said she had some JFK half dollars nd other stuff she had saved that I could look through and have whatever I wanted. Here's what I got: 118 40% 4 silver Roosevelt dimes3 War Nickels38 LWC's 1 1847 large cent

Jrh that's awesome! My great grandma apparently had boxes and boxes of old coins. She was about 102,103 at the time when my grandparents sold them and at that time I was about 12 and wasn't into coin collecting. They sold some of the coins for about 8k though. They would of gave them to me too Thats the unfortuante part

Quote: I mean seriously, my FIRST 8 boxes ever yield not a single silver? You're in a bad cycle. It happens. I've "paid my dues" to the tune of 12 boxes. Either ride it out or stop for awhile, realizing your dumps are only contributing to the problem. Give the system time to recover. These bank bags take a long time to fill up, if it's not all dumped-coin. Those boxes you were getting were probably boxed a week before you got them. Understand, they operate on a FIFO protocol, as these aren't perishable items. The first stuff that comes in is the first stuff that goes back out.
