I voted Buffalo nickel because that is what seems to be generally used.

I always call it a buffalo, but I believe the proper term is Indian Head.

Apparently either one works, but I outright prefer Buffalo.

Bison Nickel

I voted Buffalo nickel because I use both Buffalo nickel and Bison Nickel pretty much equally

I have the same view on this that I have on the penny/cent. While "Indian Head Nickel" or "Cent" are probably the technically correct terms, " Buffalo nickel" and "Penny" are so commonly used (even by the US Mint when it comes to "Penny") that they are both perfectly acceptable and correct.

Indian Head cents is a common term to me, not Indian head nickels. So I say it is a Buffalo nickel

I grew up calling them Buffalo nickels but apparently American bison are not actually buffalo - they simply resemble them (them being the Cape Buffalo and the Water Buffalo). For sentimental purposes they will always be Buffalo nickels to me.

It's a Bison nickel of course or a black diamond nickel if you wish . I have always referred to them as Buffalo nickels.

Many coins have a proper name and a nick name.

In this case both are used, even the new Mega Red Book
list them as " Indian head or Buffalo nickel"

I have not looked it up, but I think the mint went from
Liberty head nickel to Indian head nickel, the public
started calling it Buffalo nickel.

Many times what the public calls a coin is not what the
mint started out calling the coin.

Mercury dimes proper name is Winged Liberty dime
V nickels is Liberty head nickel.

Barber dime, quarter and half dollar are Liberty head.

I also believe the "proper" term is Indian Head, but the term buffalo is what I always called them.
