Hi all, I am looking at purchasing an 2000 $1 mule coin but am concerned about fakes. Can anyone provide any information on how to spot a fake from the real thing? Attached is an image of a coin I am currently looking at. Any thoughts?

I haven't heard of fakes for this coin yet although the reverse looks odd. It looks very flat.

I am a bit concerned by the lack of detail with the mob of roos. When I compare to a $1 mule authenticated by PCGS there appears to be more detail although it could just be to do with the lighting or the way the picture was taken.

to CCF. On the obverse,is that ring around the rim normal for that coin? Could be a joint like a Magician's coin?

Thanks John

The 2000 $1 mule was struck with a 10c obverse which causes the rim since the 10c coin is slightly smaller. Having said that the rim on this coin seems extremely symmetrical especially compared to other $1 mules I have seen.

If I were you, I would buy it only if I was sure it was authentic- unless an expert can give you a definitive yes or no, I say don't buy it.

It looks ok in my opinion. As mentioned, it's the angle of the photo taken that may look a bit odd. I suppose the seller doesn't have excellent photography skill.

That said, it's getting very very hard to find one in such excellent condition!

I might be on the wrong tram as I specialise in Pre-Dec. but isn't the Queens head smaller on a 2000 mule?,just compare to a normal $1.

Thanks for your thoughts everyone, much appreciated.

Basil - the head size to me looks ok but I am definitely not a specialist! When I compare this coin to another $1 mule taken from a similar angle it has similarities. (see below)

Look alright to me. Realistically I think they're kind of hard to fake without striking a whole new coin but that seems like a pretty involved process compared to altering a regular 1966 20c to make a fake wavy baseline for example. Not impossible, but not that likely.

Thanks for everyone's thoughts! The coin ended up selling for $1000 which is more than I was comfortable paying without any kind of authentication or grading. The centered strike on the coin is amazing and also the best I have seen, could be a good pickup to the person who purchased.

I ended up buying a $1 mule through a PCGS authorised dealer graded as AU58. Excited to get this coin!!

I definitely wouldn't buy this coin https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/204975322351, listed on ebay at the start of Sept (2024). Looks a bit like the coin pictured here https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces128492.html
