I have moved out of my comfort zone, and purchsed my first American coin and I suspect I should be regretting the purchase. It was an Auction buy from an Austrian auction house, but the post Auction behavior, with out going into details, was such I paid by paypal rather than the more normal bank transfer. I have an idea that there is something wrong with the coin but don't want to put ideas in peoples minds. Is this coin OK? what sort of value. The annoying thing is I received the coin late yesterday and am travelling tomorrow so returning it is probably not possible

US Trade dollars are, as a group, one of the most counterfeited/faked/altered US issues. That's why it's HIGHLY recommended that they be bought slabbed. I am not very familiar with the issue so I won't comment on the counterfeited aspect. But there are enough hairlines for me to suspect it's been cleaned.

Looks like a genuine, but cleaned, EF/AU coin. Value $200 ish?

No expert. I own one slabbed, but I don't see any red flags here. It just looks real to me, but possibly cleaned a while ago......seeing some hairlines on ob and rev, but could be wrong about that. It's actually a pretty nice looking coin imo. Will wait for other responses.

You are all reflecting my views bad hairlines...cleaned. I think the auctioneers behavior made me suspicious. The story. I submitted a bid through six bid. auction passed then almost two weeks passed before the results achieved were posted. Intriguingly the coin sold for what I bid... so I contacted the auctioneer asking if someone else had won it.. the answer came back that I was the winner and they had sent me the invoice almost two weeks ago. they resent the invoice by email. For Austrian business practices the lack of a received invoice just didn't feel right the original invoice has never turned up. I won't speculate but I was very glad paypal exists it made me feel a little safer paying. I paid more than what has been indicated here but not too much more. But it was just enough more to ensure I will be a lot more cautious in the future. Thank you all

The coin looks genuine but as others have mentioned the hair lines indicate an old cleaning. Grade on this one most likely AU-53 details.

Yes with the others. I am rather confident to is a genuine coin in the $200 range and has at some point been cleaned.

I think you did good on price.
Exchange rates may be skewing the market some here.

Looks genuine to me. If it's a counterfeit, it's a darn good one.

Thanks all again. Off to do some coin hunting in Jordan( am a little nervous haven't been there for a few years) amongst other things. You have all reassured me. The purchase experience, though nothing wrong with it, was different enough to perhaps have made me more concerned than perhaps I should have been

From your second post it kind of sounded like you weren't the highest bidder originally and that deal fell through and then it came to you. Something about the delay and the not getting the invoice just didn't sit right.
Like they say though, the fruit grows on the limb of the tree. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
Nice coin, enjoy Jordan.

How much did you pay? I don't know what the conversion would be to US dollars but I think you did pretty good for living in Austria. Makes you wonder how these coins end up their, what their story is.

Weigt & specific gravity are must do procedures on any raw specimens of these. Provided there are no surprises in the results of those tests, I'd judge thisn to be a wholly satisfactory "type" coin.

well I'm in Jordan. All your comments are reassuring. Yes I suspect I wasn't the first successful bidder but it can only ever be a suspicion I paid the equivalent of US$350.00 which I think is a over value. However I was looking for a type coin, and one from San Francisco. I don't think I will be +a customer of that Auction house again.I do take risks with some auction houses but usually only in my area expertise. I broke my own rules buying outside my knowledgebase from an unknown,to me, seller.
