The idea has been in my head for a couple of weeks now. As it stands, the only coins left for me to complete my Morgan and Buffalo nickel sets are the expensive ones. I'm just sort of not in the mood to spend big money on any single coin right now. At this point it feels like a race to completion with those sets. I want to have fun again starting a new set. And I want to do it right this time. Learn and study up on a particular series first, decide on said series, and then start buying. Is anyone else experiencing this same type of situation? Well, see, I kind of messed up here... I have about 7 sets that I started, and let me tell you that is not a good thing. I have albums that have only 3-4 coins in there because I started too many sets at once. Here are all the sets I have: -Lincoln Cents 1909-2016 -Buffalo Nickels -Liberty Head Nickels -Shield Nickels -Barber Dimes -Mercury Dimes -Franklin Halves
Wayyy to much! So, no, I am not in this situation although I would love to be (lol)

I am in this situation also. What I did to alleviate my coin buying itch is start a couple of easier sets. I started a Washington quarter set (not as easy as I thought) and a Wheat cent set. Yes, there are several expensive dates in both of those sets, but I get the gratification of filling holes again for not a lot of money while I wait on just the right keys I need to complete my other sets.

I'm never in the mood to spend big money on any single coin, unless it's heavily underpriced, gold, or both (and my definition of "big money" involves sums in the vicinity of $20, so I probably won't even start with Morgans), so in the rare cases when I do start sets, I try to figure out what the keys are so that I can ignore them at the outset.
It had happened previously that some coins (semi-keys, or the next step after that) turned out to be more expensive, or more uncommon, than I expected (still looking for many 17th century rulers in my kopek set... I actually have the Swedish type of Vasily Shuisky, but not the regular one, which is just silly). But if I definitely know something is a key, I just build the set without it. And if (as had also happened) I find out that something is very rare after I started the set it's in, I'll just strike that out of my set plan post-factum. (But will still be looking anyway, in case I get lucky and find it cheaply.)
Perhaps jpbone's explanation is right for why I started on my 2016 planned set (Romanian): "the gratification of filling holes again for not a lot of money". (It was definitely right for my 2015 plan, the Russian type set; sadly that one fell through as now I visit coin-selling places a lot less commonly.)

Funny darth. I have tons of albums, some complete, some not but it doesn't bug me too much as I can fill holes whenever I want. However, I'm sort of in the exact opposite situation as you. I've been thinking as of late that I want to lay off of general knowledge advancement and focus big time on morgans and peace to advance my VAM knowledge to a messydesk level lol

@Darth Morgan - I have had a complete Ike set for a while and have just been upgrading coins in it for some time now... So I got the itch the other day to start a new easy set and a new challenging set so I am starting on SBAs and Jeffersons... The Jefferson set is a little big and daunting but it will be fun... Ike was a fun set too, you might like that one.

I understand where you are with your Morgan and Buffalo sets and share your position not wanting to purchase the high dollar keys, however I'm not starting a new set, I'm just working on duplicate sets that really don't have expensive key dates. I'm working on updating my #2 Jefferson set to all BU coins and finishing up my #6 Lincoln 7106 album in BU RD/RB. I still have a few common date Morgans I need for my well circulated set (along with all key dates and many semi-key dates) so that always on my radar as well as 1883-O and 1904-O Morgan VAMS. So, needless to say, a new series is not in my budget, unfortunately. Whew..

Working on my Dansco 7111 currently. Got the 85, 12-S out of the way and a few others. I'm going full LIBERTY and above. I started a Dansco Half Dime set too. Got the 1795 and a few others too

I've already got many Albums. Most are complete and some close. I've now trying a set of Nickels and Dimes but all in one Album. For example Shield, Liberty Head, Indian Head and Jefferson all in one Album. Naturally no proofs or errors. Similar with Dimes.

I've been thinking about collecting albums first... As for sets, Roosevelt dimes seems the most doable for me right now. Mercury dimes minus keys after that. I have a low budget so those coins should be a good start.

Nearly finished filling albums with the typical modern coins (Abe, Jeff, Roosie, Georgie, Ike, small dollars, etc.), trying to wrap up my Kennedys right now. Most everything I have is circulated. Was considering starting Peace dollars or Franklin halves. Then I remembered one modern I haven't done yet. So, 2016 is the year of the American Silver Eagle for me (especially since silver prices are currently low). For the classics, only one last hole to fill in my 7070 (Seated Liberty $1 with motto). That will be done by next month.

Hmm.... going to be getting a Dansco soon for my Jeffersons and going to start a Roosevelt dime set & a clad quarter set in the next couple months. I don't buy Danscos unless I have the set completely or nearly done.

I promised myself I would finish the Canadian 5 cent silver collection before moving on. I have about 90% of it done with all varieties included but still need to purchase most of the very expensive keys. So I caved in today and got my silver dollar set started with this purchase: https://goccf.com/t/251373 I may have broken my rule, but it did feel good.
