and his dad wants to spend it on a coin (or 2). My son received a $100 Visa gift card for Christmas and we still have it laying around. His birthday is soon after Christmas, so he has more than enough toys, etc. He has started a set of Buffalo nickels. The LCS has a bowl he likes to dig through and find a few for his Whitman folder. He is also collecting National Park quarters from change. Anyway, I like classic coins and figured we either put the $100 in the bank or buy a nice coin with it. He's already going to be getting all of mine some time down the line, but I thought he would like a nice one now. He likes "shiny ones". What would you buy for $100 that might appeal to a 6-year-old boy?

You could pick up a Proof Set and a Silver Eagle from the year he was born and still have plenty left over. Both are Shiny, and significant to him. You could also get supplies. A magnifying glass, some flips for the change he finds, maybe a storage box or two and a few coin rolls from the bank for him to go through in the next few years.
When I was a kid my Grandfather would buy me the Young Collectors Clad Commemorative from the Mint. I don't think they exist anymore, but I wouldn't be surprised if the Mint still offered a similar set for children interested in coins.
Best of Luck!

there are alot of cheap proofs floating around. I would recommend proof commems, find a design that appeals to him. A proof commem would most usually be less than 100$. If he likes shiny then proof makes sense. You could also do the ASE or any 1 oz bullion coin, there are many many designs. All less than 100$.

I envy the potential fun you will have with your young son. The next 12 years will seem to go by in about 2 years. You asked about coins, not toys. He needs something he can hold in his hands. Looking at the coins in a proof set is maybe 1 minute of cool. 3 different dates Morgan dollars and one Peace dollar. You should be able to get four nice circulated examples near that $10". Holding those four huge old chunks of silver in his hands will give him serious WOW. You can teach him about holding them on the edges, but also explain that because they are circulated it won't hurt them to hold them. Let him work some silver into his blood system.

Maybe an 1850's large cent in nice F-VF condition would be cool to throw in the mix.

Start him off like most of us did when we were kids. buy a few rolls of mixed date wheats, mixed date Jeff's 30's,40's &50's , for his shiny likings ch. bu Jeff's 1960 - 2016 , a few mint and proof sets , some ave. circ V-Nickels , some ave. circ. IHC, etc. These would be very satisfying for any young child .

something that he can hold in his hand and show his friends, but not something he can spend accidentally...

I like the old, big silver dollar idea. At 6 he'd probably like something he can both touch and treasure....
What about something like I saw Cascade was doing for his brother... A pirate chest to fill with silver rounds. I'd think a 6 year would love to have pirate treasure like Jake the pirate.
Other ideas- my 4 year old loves to look at my hall of fame baseball commemorative coin.
Keep up the good work!
