Hi folks,

I was looking at some recently acquired mint sets and found a damaged quarter dollar in the 68-p cello. I've got photos but they're bad (phone) and there is nothing wrong with the cello, so it happened before the coins went into the packaging. If it was circulated, I would describe it as looking like someone went at it with a metal snip but only making it from one edge through the IGWT letters. The two parts (rims) are displaced, but only by a mm or so. It's visible on the reverse too but I can't get an edge shot because it's still in original packaging.

Any thoughts?

I have always been told an error coin occurs up to the moment the coin is struck. After the coin is struck and leaves the press anything that happens after that even in the mint facility is considered post mint damage. That is why some people prefer the term post strike damage over post mint damage because it is more accurate.

Yeah, sounds like that may be the case. It's an interesting find, though.

Sometimes the cello sealer damages the coin when they get to close to the edge of the cello. They usually have little squares like the edge of the cello. But a coin could be damaged before they were put into the cello as pyrbob mentioned.

No sign of patterning on the coin, so it must have happened between the press and the packaging machine. so, PSD it is! And, pyrbob, thanks for the "up to the point the coin is struck" definition - I like that because it has a clear line. I think it just went into some machine a bit out of line after it was struck and got "pinched". It's a curved cut so maybe a counting machine or something?

I'll have a better chance to assess it when a break it out of the mint set.
