Here's another coin I saw on ebay. The photos are not the best. It's an 1857 Flying Eagle cent with an obverse that looks to be in very high grade. However, the reverse appears to have been perhaps cleaned or maybe it's a coin that was dug up. I put in a bid, but didn't win the auction. The coin sold for $40. How would you grade this coin and what would a coin like this be worth? Thanks for sharing your opinions. These are, of course, the auction photos. *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***Paul Bulgerin

IMHO, XF details, ED, looks to be corroded .... $25, tops.

It looks like somebody tried like heck to bring it back from the dead but just couldn't get all the corrosion off. Good bones but too far gone.

That coin has no eye appeal. Is it real?
Maybe just bad picture.

I think its just a bad picture. No reason to fake an 1857 FEC.

Looks AU details. I would not bid more than what it went for with those pictures and the stuff on the reverse.

EF details, environmental damage and a weak reverse but the feathers are really sharp on the obverse which is hard to find on a cheap Flying Eagle cent. $40 sounds about right for a value.

EF details for me and it may have been a 'dug' coin.

Really? EF for an FE that has full breast feathers and full feathers on its left wingtip? Remind me to always buy full-detail FE cents from you guys for EF prices.

Thanks for all the responses. I was thinking AU details with the strong breast feathers, but also a harshly cleaned coin with surface problems.
