I was on the far side of town today, and on the way home I swung by a little out-of-the-way shop I'd visited before. That time I bought a Standing Liberty quarter in pretty decent shape, for $13. I figured I either got a fairly inexpensive lesson in what to look out for, or a decent buy. I had a dealer I'm pretty comfortable with look at it and he said he'd have charged at least $30-40 for it.

This time, I found two more coins that seemed to be in pretty good shape for the prices they had on them. First was an 1868 2C piece, they wanted $8 for it.

Second was an 1869 Shield nickel, they wanted $26, and they threw in a little wooden display box they had it in.

Once again, I thought the prices were too low for the condition of the coins, but I figured what the hey--the box alone is kinda nice and I can use it for another coin.

So here are the coins and the box. What do you guys think?

If you soaked the Shield nickel in acetone to remove the staining (or is it toning?) it could be worth at least $50.

the 2 cent piece is environmentally damaged
the Shield nickel may or may not conserve properly regardless of treatment advice

You could have bid on this for your range of spend

The 2 cent piece is a details coin from corrosion , but for $8 your safe . The acetone might work on those black spots on the Shield nickel . $26 good price .

I didn't think either one was anything to write home about, but I figured they almost had to be worth more than the asking price.

These also have a PF69 DCAM (ANACS) 2003S Lincoln and asking $5.

I think I'd better take a closer look at the higher priced coins in the shop next time. If those are similarly priced, I'm going to feel honor-bound to say so (I actually did say something about the SL Quarter--the guy smiled and said he knew it was priced low). Maybe they're charging less because it IS a little out of the way shop (the signage is only visible from the back of the building they're in, not from the major thoroughfare the building sits along), and they need to build up a loyal customer base.

The 2 Cent piece has active PVC damage and the WE is totally worn off. I would not pay $8 for the coin as it is a low grade damaged coin.

The wood box isn't bad. The coins, for the price you paid, are not going to make or break you. They are decent for the prices you paid. You did not get ripped off.

I've purchased too many details coins over the years so I would have passed on the 2-cent piece. The nickel however is a decent choice if you want a type example in that price range. I think you did OK.

How about some photos of that Standing Lib quarter?

That alone is worth the $8

Haven't we all

The best way to become advanced at this hobby is to make some mistakes and actually handle and own some problem examples to learn from.

Sometimes ... it is hard not to have a little fun with posting...

But to be serious.

I agree the Shield nickel was not a bad purchase. If someone was
Putting a type set together that would fill the Shield nickel with out rays
hole ... and look good being there.

Finding nice Two Cent coins can be a challenge. I am sure many of mine
are similar .... you did not pay much for it ..so no big deal.

For this hobby .. not all purchases are going to be home runs.
You can learn from your good buys .. and your bad buys.
We all make both.

Just have fun and enjoy building your collection.

The Shield nickel looks nice to me. The 2 center - not bad, for $8 can't expect much - it's presentable and almost 150 years old, so if you can deal with the PVC not a bad little coin to have in your collection.

I like the Shield nickel. And the 2 cent piece, although damaged, is still a good pickup to have as an example piece. As GR58 said those can be hard to find in nice condition. So overall good job. You not only increased your knowledge, but you did it very cheaply compared to some of my mistakes over the years.

Agree the nickel is very nice, all the more so if that discoloration will dissolve.
