I'm interested in starting my first ever album (whether it's an actual album or just in binder pages) and I was wondering what your suggestions are. I want something to start that will not be overly expensive or take years to finish. My first idea concerning this was Statehood Quarters. I really like Morgan dollars but think that will get too expensive for me. My next two favorite coins so far are Buffalo nickels and Indian Head cents but I don't know how difficult or expensive those could be to complete. I guess it would be appropriate being able to finish the album by the end of 2017 even if that is with some low-grade placeholders. What did you guys start with and what do you think would be most appropriate for a beginner with a limited budget for purchases? Jefferson nickels would be a good album to start on. Not too expensive and plenty of coins to collect to complete the set. Most can be Noodled from your change or get a few rolls from the bank

that Jefferson nickels is a good first album. Just be careful to decide whether it's going to be a circulation book or a mint book. When I did mine I started off with circulation issues but had a hard time finding some. Then I went to ebay and bought a few. When I put the ebay (uncirculated) ones by the circulated ones it didn't look right so I started a second album for BU Jeffersons and all my time, money and interest went into the second album.

A Franklin half dollar set is rather short so you can finish it in a year. It contains nice big silver coins. There are no keys that are hard to find or cost a ton. Very nice looking collection when complete and if you stay in the AU grade range most of them can be purchased fairly close to their melt value. Even many BU would only be a bit over melt value.

Don't forget about Ike! It's a pretty easy and inexpensive set to do, and once the basic set is done you can branch out into the varieties...

You may not want to buy a hundred Morgans, but right now it's a buyer's market for many examples. Maybe you could pick out one nice one. Good Luck.

With the Morgan's you could do a date set or collect 40 common date Morgan's. If you want to collect out of circulation, the Jefferson nickle or State Quarter is the way to go.

I'd go along with Jefferson nickels. And there are several ways to collect them. Also, many companies make Albums for those such as Littleton, Dansco, Whitman, Harris, etc. Such albums are available at most Hobby or coin stores. The only real problem is trying to fill the Proof ones since they are never, or almost never, found in change. Whatever you try, don't try for Large Cents, Sitting Liberty coins, or any coins that require only purchasing.

No one has mentioned Roosevelt dimes yet. I think I spent about a month to build the first album. I'm now on album number two as I upgrade the first album. I'm pretty sure you can build the set from junk bins and change (if you skip proof issues) for around $100. Ikes are also a good choice. I have probably 10 complete sets right now.

It will matter what interests you Many good suggestion so far. My suggestions Dansco album Prices are just a guess Franklin half dollar - Mid $200's and up Ike dollars $100 and up ... two choices with or without proofs Morgan dollar date set - 32 coins lower grade $900 to $1000 and up From roll searching Jefferson nickels without proofs State Quarters - I would try to put a high grade set together. Lastly .. a modern commemorative dollar type set.1983 to date 3 albums. This set would take much more than a year, but would be a special set when completed....

All good ideas.
If you were my friend who asked me this in person I would tell you to buy an inexpensive 3 ring binder, 6 20 position coin pages and 100 cent size 2X2. Then go to your bank and ask for a $25 box of pennies.
Your goal is to find a complete business strike set of RED Lincoln Memorial cents in a year or less. This is completely doable in the time frame, inexpensive, and educational.
I have been collecting since 1971 so I do not think of myself as a novice or beginner and I did this in 2016. I started just after Christmas 2015 and found my last needed coin the week of Thanksgiving 2016.
Its fun, its cheap and it gives you something to do while you are watching reruns of mindless sitcoms. And you can get a nice set of coins from it.

Collecting to what end? Fun? Value? Investment? Stress (your wife said "get a hobby or get out")? Each one points to a different collection. The fact that you want to "finish" it by the end of the year, suggests that your not a very patient person and want to "test" the coin collecting waters to see if it is something you want to stick with. What I have done is a few ongoing collection, long term collections for investment, short term collections for the impatient me and a few expandable collections. ATB Quarters are great for short term, they are cheap (you can get them for $0.25) You can collect a circulated type set to start, if you like it, you can expand to a circulated P&D, if you really get into it, you can expand to proofs, silver proofs, go all out and include S-mint. A good looking affordable and a simple or all out set. Learn some history on the way also. Same can be said about Morgans, a date set is both satisfying, affordable and a minor long term investment. From there you can start other mint mark sets or if you have several thousand dollars laying around, you can go for the whole set. I also collect commemorative dollars, another beautiful set, coin silver for a perceived investment, simple date set, date and mint mark set or all out date, MM and proof set, as your ardor dictates. I collect all these sets, each can be as simple or complex, as affordable or majorly expensive as you desire.

Thank you everyone for the suggestions. It seems the Jefferson have it! It's funny because in the limited CRH I've done, most of the coins I set aside are Jefferson nickels and the best examples of the State Quarters I could find. I think I'll start with a circulation Jefferson album and trying to put together a higher grade State Quarter set. I think this will fit in well with the roll hunting I'd like to do and minimize outright purchases for now. Thanks again!
