I have 2 1956 and 4 1964 proof sets still sealed in original envelopes. Should I open them or not? I'm torn, someone please advise me on what to do!! Thank you

What is your intention for them?
I'm not aware that either of these dates contains a potential numismatic treasure ... so open them if you need to regal in the joy of the coins.

I have been collecting coins on and off for 20 years and love coins in general but was always told to leave them closed. They call to me from the safe to open them lol

I would open them. If you get lucky, one of your 1964 halves might be one of the accented hair types. Or you couls have a set full of cameos or nice toning. If you do open them, be sure to post pictures...

Are you talking about opening the envelopes, or breaking them out of the cello holder.
If the envelopes, they were not sealed from the mint. Sometimes they get sealed after leaving the mint. Nicely opening the the envelope does not hurt the value.
For the 1956 I would look for a type 1 Franklin. For the 1964 I would look for accent hair Kennedy.
Both I would look for cameo proof coins.

When a coin calls -- you must obey. Go ahead and open them. Enjoy them.

1956 Half, per PCGS: Among the 1956 Half Dollar Proofs, the Type 1 is much less common than the Type 2. The PCGS Population Report (as of February 2012) shows 885 Type 1s and 8,587 Type 2s. This rough 1:10 ratio is slightly higher than Breen's guesstimate of 1:20 (5%), which was actually not too far from the mark. Cameo Proofs are about five times as rare as the non-Cameos. Deep Cameo Proofs are exceedingly rare. 1964 Half, per PCGS: Since the 1964 Proof Kennedy half with the Accented hair variety was replaced the same year, the Accented Hair variety became somewhat scarce compared to the regular issue proof coins of that year. Less than 5% of the entire 1964 Proof Kennedy half dollar mintage is believed to have the Accented hair variety.

I buy sealed proof sets and open them to put the coins on ebay. Sometimes I get lucky like last week when I bought a 55 set for $95, opened it and sold the Franklin half which was a cameo for $85. The there are times the coins don't look so good and you can still sell the unsealed sets.

I bought them for $20 each, so I do not have much invested in these sets.

If you do open them, be careful with the envelope... Original packaging makes a difference... If they are toned you cah get some crazy premiums... At this point, all I buy must have colorful toning...

Just hold the envelope glue over a steady flow of steam and it will open easily.
