Hello friends,

My step-father use to be a parking meter repair man in the 50's and 60's. He was also a coin collector of sorts and my mother wants me to start parting out these old dimes and nickels since he passed some 20 years ago.

I have to say, that they are not mint condition but some are nice looking to say the least. There are hundreds of Mercury dimes and Roosevelt dimes and Jefferson nickels dating from 1940 to the early 60's. I have not gone through them yet I am just trying to separate them by year.

Since these coins are circulated and range from good to fine condition, is there any value or are they just face value for the most part?

I will wear gloves touching them just in case.

With the Mercury dimes it all depends on the date and mint mark ;1916-D ,1921-P,D . Nothing with the Roosevelt dimes and with Jefferson's starting from 1940 ,just all War Nickels and the 1950-D .
There are a few others hear and there with all your coins but nothing of a lot of value .

Pre 1965 dimes are 90% silver so they have melt value. You should check all the coins for errors and varieties.Nickels with the mint mark above the building are 35% silver.

I do online auctions a lot. Seems the going price for rolls of Mercs and Rosie's is over $65-$75 each. If there are no rare/error coins among these, that would be a way to get more than melt value from your LCS, try a local auction company to consign.

Do look for the 1942/1941 P & D over dates on the Mercs, very high $ coins!

Look for the 1949PDS of the Rosie's, seem harder to come by nowadays.

Keep all 11 1942-45 silver War Nickels, these go well at auctions as well. Save the 5 key date Jeffersons, 38D, 38S, 39D, 39S & 50D, some places sell circ sets for $18+. Look for 1943/2P overdate, major high $ coin.

Lastly, you can sell to us on the forum, save fees to auction, PayPal etc. A lot of options, my quest for coins started in 2014 with an inherited jar of silver dimes too.

Actually it would be against the rules to do so -- at least for now.

However, please feel free to ask any questions you have about the coins. If you feel you have found an error coin or a die variety, we'll need pics to confirm it.

Other than that, you can check the values of coins by looking at ebay sold prices.

Are you dividing these up for other family members? If so, how many coins do you have to sort through?

I ask because it is a bit of work to check for errors and varieties. That kind of work is fun for me, but maybe not for you.

You may just want to do a search for each year and mint mark plus 'die varieties' and see what pops up.

As for error coins -- huge errors are worth quite a bit, but if the coins went through a parking meter, there is practically no chance you have one of those.

Take a look at this site's section on error coins and look at some for sale on ebay to get an idea about them.

Hope that helps.

Buddy, let me clarify, not pay pal fees, the auction consignment take of usually 13-15%, some higher, run from those! Yes if PayPal used here, can't bypass those fees, why I'm a sucker for the honor system, take checks...just sad when get took, too bad some are just weiners.

Thank you everyone for the advice. I will try and go through them, but based on the information given, it might just be worth it to see the whole lot of them to someone who has time to sit through them. I wish I could, but I just don't right now.

He also had some commemorative medals from the 70's as well, but from what I see online, there isn't much value there either. I feel bad, this man put a lot of time into this and it is almost worth nothing.

Unlikely, unless you said something untoward that the moderator picked up late.

It was his hobby and I'm sure he enjoyed it. If there is anyone else in the family that has any interest, they may appreciate the collection. Or maybe, some day, you will enjoy it.

If you're determined to let it go, you might look for a local coin club and donate the coins for their young numismatists. Or sell to a local coin shop -- after all, there is some silver in that collection.

If you have any questions about offers from a coin shop, feel free to ask.

I understand not having time to sort through a lot of coins that I don't know much about.

I'll say at least take T-BOP's advice and search for those to pick out. Crazyb0 also added some good ones to look for. The rest can generally go to someone else that's willing to sort it all out.

Just don't let those high-dollar ones go for nothing if there are any in the lot.
