It looks to have some wear but no distracting marks. I say 'ish' becasue it could push to EF45 or even AU50. I refer to my RedBook and see what they have to say on the grading scale. I have to say I do need practice, I could be a tad off. EF40 states LIBERTY and scroll edges distinct, which I see. I guess that sums it up for me. Please anyone correct me if I'm wrong  |

I think this one is probably a high AU and has a shot at mint state depending (as usual!) on luster. If wear is present it should show up on Liberty's right thigh and on her head, and on the highest-relief portions of the reverse wreath. I'm not sure I see any wear. Some luster is present and the strike is generally sharp except for the right-side denticles. Nice obverse die cracks! There might be a tiny spot of damage at about 10:00 on the reverse, right in the denticles. The streaky reverse toning doesn't add a lot of eye appeal IMO but it seems natural. I'm thinking AU-58 but I wouldn't be completely surprised to see this coin in an NGC MS-62 slab. Nice one!  |

I found this coin advertised as a MS63 but priced at $300.Is this a over-graded coin that's under priced or a Mint State coin that's a bargain ?

AU58 or MS63. Depends if there's any luster breaks. It does appear to be very lusterous and beautiful, though.

HABIB, can you describe what makes you think it's been dipped? The toning streaks on the reverse could be artifacts of some chemical treatment which maybe was not completely rinsed off, but I'm not at all sure about that. The photos are excellent (I wish mine were that good!), not leaving much room for defects to hide. The obverse looks original and un-messed-with, based on what I'm seeing.  |

I'm leaning to MS-63, from what is shown in the photos. In hand it may be a different story. These little Half Dimes are small coins and relatively thin. Strikes were often problematic, so getting really clear details along the edge of the shield, and "LIBERTY" for example just didn't always happen. The toning, though, makes me a bit leary; it may have been dipped or otherwise cleaned. (Very, very common for coins of this era, in my experience.) The die crack connecting the stars in the 9-11 o'clock position is a cool "bonus" in my book, but shouldn't affect value either way. I might drop $300 on the coin if I had it in hand and was satisfied with the eye-appeal. |

It could possibly be AU58 but I would rather own this AU58 than an average MS62/63. That coin has a hammered strike- fully separated stars, visible ear canal, full denticles on reverse and the color is awesome too  Judging by the toning, I would say it spent some time wrapped in light tissue paper. If I had $300 to spend on a Half Dime, I would have no problem spending it on this one. Edited by biokemist6

I have no problem with the probability that it was dipped and retoned. The dip job looks like it was done right and it's retoning nicely.

my comments: obverse patina shows, "dipped" to me.
