I have to admit that I watched the Heritage sale of the 43 copper in real time.... Unfortunately the couch cushion search only yielded about 0.001% of the sale price!
Didn't know about the Birch or I would have watched that as well!

The made an error stating "This 1972 penny sold for $211,500. ALL IMAGES COURTESY HERITAGE AUCTIONS" That 1772 Birch Cent is awesome.

Even if I can never own a coin like those, I'm so glad they and their history has survived.

Very interesting, thanks for sharing! I really like that Birch cent as well, and I'm glad it's no longer "lost."

I am also glad it survived and was rediscovered after it was sold for $75 all those years ago. Just wow!

Unfortunately, this 1943 copper falls in line with the general decline in coin prices. The price guide was 500k, and although that is a high and unrealistic number, an AU58 example sold last year for over 300k. Three years ago, an AU55 sold for 329k. This should have brought more at auction.
Although right now seems like a bad time to consign coins to auction, is it actually better to consign now as coin prices will just keep dropping?
