It's just damage from circulation and/or a coin counting machine, PSD.

Just so that I can learn a little here...I wonder about the OP's second pic, which shows the rev inscription bleeding into the rim. I agree that this could be caused by preferential PMD in that area, but couldn't this also be an example of excessive die wear? The coin has taken enough hits during its use that perhaps any concomitant flow lines might have been obscured. See for example, @coop's excellent pics showing VLDS Jefferson nickels here:

Spence, it's in a VLDS as it shows massive Die Deterioration. But it also shows heavy PMD from being in circulation for so long.

Looks like the reverse die is VLDS. That would explain why it touches the rim. Die wear is flowing that direction. Also some circulation flattening.

Ok thanks @coop and @e&v. Just to be clear to @dookie, both of your coins show PMD, but the first one also shows evidence of a later die state.
