We know National Numismatic Certification's (NNC) reputation, but this 1857 Flying Eagle doesn't look horribly cleaned or over-graded. I'm not sure if that's a slight bit of rub on the breast feathers or not.

The grade is blacked out. The seller is "centsles", the NNC slabber, who is listing it as a "Near Gem BU".

What do folks think about this one?

why would they black out the grade. this doesn't make sense unless they were hiding something. the obverse looks AU58 to me, the reverse weakly struck which is typical also appears to be in the 55/58 range.
Rest in Peace

I'm seeing rub at high points both obverse and reverse. Plus there is evidence of field disturbance.

I'd give a technical grade of 58.

The two big questions are - 1) Has this been cleaned? And 2) Has the photos been "improved".

This seller is known for yes responses to both questions.

This seller has ruined so many nice coins by cleaning.

Remember the UNBREAKABLE RULE: Their is always a reason why a coin sells for a cheap price

Only some of the TPG's can be used on ebay. I believe that by blacking out the grade he can bypass the rules.

I don't know why the seller would black out the grade unless he has something to hide. It looks like AU 55 to me. It's definitely not "Near Gem BU".

As moxking said, the question is whether the coin has been cleaned or the photos have been modified. I personally would not buy this coin, and instead look for a seller that has a better reputation.

Thanks for the responses so far.

The only U.S. coin I have purchased in an NNC slab, an 1804 Half Cent, was returned because it had damage that didn't show in the photo. I stay away from their U.S. slabs, but was curious about this one.

I have bought ancient Roman coins in NNC holders, because in the past they sometimes misattributed a coin and you could pick up something nicer they didn't know about.

I once got a coin of the scarcer emperor Allectus misidentified as the emperor Aurelian. They both start with "A", you know.

Since I can see a "+" after where the grade is blacked out, I think that NNC graded it MS69+.

The rim on the reverse at the 9:30 to 10:00 position appears to be damaged/bent. The coin appears AU but is missing that little "Details - Damaged" note on the label that every legitimate grading service would give it.

NNC is not an ebay approved grading service so he gets around it by blacking out his inflated grade on the label. Remember, Centsles and NNC are one and the same and have been called out many times on many numismatic forums for a very long time.

Always remember to ask yourself "why is this coin NOT in a legitimate slab?" before parting with your hard earned money! If you cannot answer that question then don't buy the coin!

I don't think that would keep this from a straight holder.
