I am thinking of ordering one as a present for her christening. I realize there is no limit to the number of sets that the US Mint can crank out. So, rarity is unlikely. I'm thinking of it as more of a nice gift from a her grandpa who collects coins.
Thoughts?

I also buy my grandchildren coins. My wife handles the other gifts to them.

You can't go wrong with silver. I also buy my grandchildren silver coins from the mint.

That sounds look a great idea! Maybe it will get her into coin collecting later in her life.

By all means do it. You might want to include a note reminding her that these special coins from Grandpa will always be as old as she is. By the way, you might want to buy a set for yourself and add to it with each new grandchild that comes along. Maybe make a display so they can see it when they come over to visit.

Absolutely! A beautiful gift that won't lose its value over time!
Congratulations on the first granddaughter. My first came along this spring and the second son/daughter are to have a daughter in just over a month. Also have two grandsons - getting old I guess!

Note that there is a limited edition silver proof set scheduled to come out in the fall, though details are lacking. At one point there was a teaser for a reverse proof set (!), but that's now gone. I'm guessing some of the ATB Quarters looked kind of weird in reverse proof, but who knows. (Does someone know?)

When my grandson was born, I got him the US Mint birth set, Uncirculated set, proof set, silver proof set and a Silver Eagle. I also put together a penny set from his dad and moms, grandparents and great grandparents birth years in 2x2's... Since he was born last year, he also got a Silver Uncirculated Enhanced set. For his birthday this year he is getting the US Mint Happy Birthday set, Unc Set, and both proof sets. I just hope when he is 10 he doesn't rip them out to buy candy!

Quote: I just hope when he is 10 he doesn't rip them out to buy candy! LOL. If he has custody of them, he will. When my son was a gymnast I bought him a silver gymnastics commemorative set (the unc version, not the proof). Naturally the coin came out of it because what's the point of having a coin if you can't hold it, and who knows what happened to the packaging. The coin is still around, probably an MS61 or so. Thanks for the note on the reverse set, I missed that!
