Hello All, MeowtheKitty has started coin collecting about 2-3 months ago. Meow has bought a pawful of various graded coins, and have been looking through bank rolls for interesting things to add to Meows collection. Meow has gone through about 50 nickel rolls so far, and had not found a single nickel dated 2009 of any mint.

Meow did find one silver War Nickel so far, but to find no 2009s does not make any sense at all.

So this Cat can see that 2009 Jeffersons are not very abundant in circulation. So when Meow moves to searching other denominations, are there such modern dates that are just as hard to find? And is something this Cat should keep an eye out for?

Yep, 2009 coins (any denomination except maybe quarters) are going to be hard to find in circulation, but not impossible.

I've never seen a 2009 nickel in the wild, I don't search rolls though. I have yet to find a 2009 D dime, too.

Interesting that the 2009 Jefferson would be hard to find.
Great find with the War Nickel!

Your options are limited there. Meow needs to come to the mainland and search, increase your chances x49.

Hmmm try finding 2003 Lincoln or any War Nickels in circulation. They are out there but rare.

Back in 2008 when the economy crashed a great many people were forced by their circumstances to "cash in" the change jars and other hoards of coins. This resulted in a glut of coinage at the Federal Reserve and there was very little need for any additional new coinage. Nickel and dime production was curtailed completely very early in the year, and the production of the cents and quarters were cut way back. (They probably would have stopped those completely as well but they had the problem that the quarters were the last year of the state/territory quarters, and the cents were the special one year only Lincoln bicentennial designs so they pretty much HAD to continue striking those.)

So all the coins that year, but especially the nickels and dimes, had unusually low mintages and they were pretty much all scooped up by hoarders hoping the low mintage would translate into a windfall some day. This means the coins will almost always be very common in MS condition, but will be scarce in actual circulation.

2005 Buffalo nickels are also a little harder to find, but they are available (except in my area). They are a little tougher than the mintage says they should be, because of once again serious hoarding. Almost 10% of the entire mintage was sold by the mint directly to collectors in rolls and bags, and many more people hoarded the ones they found in circulation. I don't know why the Buffalo nickel is so popular but it is.

You can also add to the list any half dollars after 2001 and any Sac dollars 2001 - 2008, all NA dollars after 2012, and all Presidential dollars after 2012. None of those were issued for circulation, but they do show up sometimes.

Hello Meow! - I find the same phenomenon with UK coins: there are some that one would expect to be common in circulation that aren't.

I've checked through 4,240 British 50 pence coins over the past few months. When I hit 5,000 I will post the results on the Forum.

The mintage figures for the following three 'semi-key' coins are:

2008 Britannia reverse - 3,500,000
2011 Archery (Olympics) - 3,345,500
2016 Beatrix Potter Squirrel Nutkin - 5,000,000

You would expect me to have found around the same number of the 2008 Britannia and 2011 Archery coins, and a few more of the Squirrel Nutkin ones, especially as they've been in circulation for a shorter period and logically fewer will have been lost or withdrawn.

Well, here are the actual numbers of each coin I've found so far:

2008 Britannia reverse - 26
2011 Archery (Olympics) - 3
2016 Beatrix Potter Squirrel Nutkin - 4

Obviously the Olympics Archery and Squirrel Nutkin coins are being extensively hoarded as they have special designs, and dealers have probably taken large numbers out of circulation and made them up into sets. Although the 2008 Britannia 50p is scarce, it's not being hoarded by the general public as it's seen as just an ordinary 50p.

I imagine the same is true about the 2009 cents and quarters - they form part of sets that are unique to that year.

"Beatrix Potter Squirrel Nutkin "

Meow is not sure who that is, and what she has accomplished; But Meow has a sudden urge to want to chase her up a tree.

And thanks for your input. Cats find coins fun.

In the future, the 2009-D Roosevelt dime will be the "Key" to the Clad (1965+) set.
Other than the 1996 W in the Mint sets, it had the lowest mintage, about 49.5 million, compared to 1/2 - 1 billion or more produced most other years.

Since 2009, I've found a couple of 2009 cents in circulation, but no other 2009 coins. It's a very odd feeling, not to be able to fill up modern holes.

There are lots of dates that are getting tough in circulation. Something like a '69-D quarter or a '71-S cent are getting few and far between. Nearly two thirds of the mintage of '69 quarters are now lost through attrition and about 80% of the '71 cents. Then add in the fact that more and more people are putting together circulation sets and finding nice attractive examples that aren't cull or heavily worn can be pretty difficult.

There are numerous varieties which are exceedingly difficult to find.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.
