*** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***Hi all, I decided to start collecting Kennedy halves, so I purchased one of those good ol' H. E. Harris coin folders. In short order, I had the folder almost filled except for three slots, including the 1970 D half, which is available only in mint sets. I went to my local coin dealer (mostly just a junk gold buyer) to see what I could find. He said he only had the 1970 D in a cellophane encased mint set and offered me the set at a modest price - which I purchased. Well, here is my dilemma: If I open the set so I can fill the slot in my coin folder, then I will have destroyed the mint set. If I want to keep the mint set intact, I will still need another 1970 D Kennedy half to complete my folder set. The plus side of the coin folder is that I would not be stuck with a vacant "hole" in the folder, as that slot has a cardboard "plug" in it which states on it that it is only issued in mint sets. My question: What would YOU do? Just askin'.

Keep the mint set. Go on ebay and get a 70-D to fill your album

ow of many cases - that the only waay to fill the folder is to break up a set.
the reason that you purchased the set - was to complete the folder...
i see no reason why you shouldn't break up the set.
....or you could search various places (including here) - for someone that has the coin that you want...
thus keeping the full set in tact.
all depends on you...and what you are attempting to accomplish.

The 1970 mint sets are dirt cheap. Bust it and put all the other coins in 2x2 or start those sets. I upgraded ALL my collections by cracking both mint and proof sets 1964-2009. If you really want to save the set, buy the single coin on ebay and pay twice what it's worth. You'll find you can just about buy TWO sets for what some smucks charge ya for a 70D half! Oh, BTW, did you just buy the D mint pack, or the complete P&D mint set? If you bought just the D's, break it, it ain't worth squat now.

I have a few albums where the place for slabbed coins is filled with a little marker "See Slab". You could do that. EDIT - here is one example. I am not cracking the slab due to authenticity and value.

Good answers all. Idea of posting notes in the coin slot is interesting. Thanks Fuzzy317
Just the D pack, Crazyb0

Do you want to own two '70-D halves or one?

I cut mine out of the set and put it in my Dansco album.

I'm one of those ones that don't let a hole in my album get to me.....as long as I have the coin in my possession. I can't see cutting up a perfectly good set when somebody else has already done the dirty work & they are plentiful as individual coins now. (That is unless there is a real crappy looking coin in the set). I'd be looking for another to put in my album...when the price is right. On a side note. I bought my first 1970 mint set in the late'80s for the 70D. My Whitman folder still has an empty hole... I have since built another set in a Dansco & 1970D still remains empty even though I have numerous 1970 mint sets. I bought a partial Dansco at below melt. This is how I obtained my only "freed" 70D.

with Crazyb0. You can get a P and D mint set for the same or less than a lot of the '70-D Kennedys by themselves. Whoever broke those single Kennedys out still has the other coins in the sets, so you might as well do the same. If you're really interested in having an intact mint set, buy 2.

All good advice. At the end of the day, do what feels right for you... BUT... upgrade that folder to an album!

I would cut it out of the mint set and move on.

I would cut it out .....
But ......
I would put it in a album instead of a folder.

I had this same quandary with the 96-W dime. Went to a coin show and the cheapest I found was $15. Went to another booth and bought the set for $9. I'll just stick the other coins in albums.

Personally, I don't think the OP should upgrade to an album. He should upgrade to coin capsules!
