We all have varied collecting interests and pursuits, and I was just wondering what started some of you down your paths? For me, it was while looking at MorganLover's (Richard Courson) website. He had the most beautifully toned Morgan I had ever seen as part of his homepage banner, and I just had to enquired about it (it was not listed for sale, it was part of his private collection). Sometimes timing is everything, and he had just been considering selling some of his own to help send a daughter to college when I asked. This is the one that sparked my interest in toners, and it will never be sold. What started you? Image: 1885-o.jpg46.02 KB

Mine is very simple and is actually recent, sense I just started collecting. I have an uncle that is an avid coin collector. At my sisters wedding, he came over to me and said that tomorrow he was going to give me something that was going to change my life. The next day at the hotel he came up to me and gave me an 1882 Morgan silver dollar and a RedBook. Since then I have been trying to learn as much as I can and have started a Morgan collection of my own. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Mine was the fact that me and my dad used to roll search Wheats. Now I collect all sorts of pennies, including wheats, the LMC and Indian Head cents.

well when I was a kid my Great grandfather used to give us kids silver dollars for our Birthday and Christmas. I still remember the heft they had when he would hand them to us right before my mom swooped in to take them away from us to put them up so we wouldn't loose them. When I started thinking about collecting I remembered this time in my life and started looking on ebay for silver dollars and thats when I found a Morgan dollar and thought WOW I have never seen one of those before so I purchased one (not knowing a thing about coins at all) and when it got here when I opened the envelope and tilted it, the coin slid out of the envelope into my hand and all those memories came rushing back from my child hood from when he would give us the coins as presents. I was hooked from that moment on

My Grandpa also gave me a Morgan each Christmas, probably why I started with them. I have no idea what got me started, but now that I'm addicted I wouldn't know what to do with all my money if I didnt keep pouring it into coins.Spoken like a true collector! Beautiful!

Yea it is a bit of an addiction. You see it and just got to have it. Like a high when it's in your hands. I started collecting just for something to do and learn about. Started with wheats and now it's out of control. :)

In 1978, my dad gave me two Eisenhower dollars, which I had never seen before or even knew they existed. I was a science nut and the Apollo insignia on the Ike reverse really impressed me. I also enjoyed history. This got me interested in coins, especially their portrayal of historical people and events. Knowing I loved to read, my mother feed my new interest with books and magazines, which had me sorting and hoarding change, but not really collecting. Eventually, reading was not enough so I started assembling sets: Lincoln Cents, Jefferson nickels, Roosevelt dimes, and Washington quarters. Eventually, as my budget grew, I worked on those Eisenhower dollars and Kennedy halves. I even started getting proof sets from the mint every year (which were eventually broken apart and put into albums).

I guess I just like underappreciated series, plus I like coins that seem a value compared to their mintages and surviving numbers.

This is a cool idea and nice to see how everyone got started. For me I actually have 3 different starts. 1. When I was a kid I had Whitman's for LMC's and dimes. 2. About 10 years ago there was a major coin show that was in Salt Lake City (when I lived there) that I went to and was just shocked and amazed at everything. I ended up walking around for hours not knowing what to do but noticed there was two tables I kept going back to. So I made a final trip to these tables where I bought my first Silver Eagle and US Large Cent. I have no idea what attracted me to them but I love them and can not enough and wish I would have bought more at the time. And 3. I moved because of work and there really was not a lot to do here so I started to explore around and found a coin store. Before I knew it, I was visiting all the time and started getting my collection started again.

Kind of really have no real favorites anymore. Way, way back naturally it was pennies since as a kid that was all I could afford. year after year the collection grew and as long as I had the money I would just continue increasing the amount of denominations of my coins. At one time the Mercury dime was my favorite and they were common in changee so completing a set was easy. Roosevelt dimes were just coming out and no one like those. However, once started going to coin shows I started collecting anything and everything. Now with well over 100 Whitman albums and almost all full, it is really difficult to find one that I like more than the others. Maybe I'll start all over again.

Not really sure what got me started, Bust Half Dollars just reek of history and like any other series people choose to collect. But, with the help of a BHNC member the bug bit me and the rest is/was history. Take Care Ben http://www.coincommunity.org/galler...hp?album=157

I'll find a coin I like and pick up some examples. Sometimes I'll be happy with a few nice coins, sometimes I'll start looking for other dates that fill in a run. I just received the two Three Cent Nickels I recently bought. Interesting and I'm glad I bought them, but now the Flying Eagle cent has caught my eye. The eagle looks so majestic in flight..... I want one!

One time I bought a box of wheat cents with a few oddball other coins in there. There was a tube of silver dimes and a tube of Liberty and Shield nickels. At the time, I could never have seen myself collecting something as old as Shield nickels, as most of my collection was modern then. But now I try to collect what I can afford in the Shield nickel series.
