It is an error, but it's pretty common on the 1950's Lincoln Wheat cent.

Looks like the 5 in the date may also have a small die chip. Not uncommon, but still interesting to find!

These die chips are common for the period, as noted, and especially on the 1957.

In the fifties the mint ran the dies into the ground and they ran into a lot of issues. Die breaks, die chips, Cuds, ect.

First,

Your coin also has a small die chip in the "9" and adjoining the "7" in the date. These chips can be fun to collect. They won't make you wealthy, but they are interesting. (In local coin shows, I sometimes sell groups of 10-12 different small die chips at $4 for the lot, so they aren't worth much.) As others have already pointed out, they are extremely common in post-WW II wheat cents, especially the high mintage dates in the 1950s. Your coin is a nice starting point for collecting them.

The cause of the device being filled in is this. The post that would normally fill in the center area of the 'B' had broken off the die. So it is not a filled in by grease issue, that come to mind of many collectors, but with the rim, it just filled in the coin now on the die and left a raised area in its place.
