They look like intentional precision holes for a specific purpose. Your thoughts on why.

Is there a way to determine if this coin was in fact an S?

A curious question.. Why are there 4 holes on the obverse and 5 holes on the reverse? Am I missing something? I usually am...

There are only 4 holes. The extra on the reverse does not go through the coin.

My guess is it is a counterfeit and the holes were put in it to keep it from getting passed off to someone else.

My first thought was a kids whizzer toy... no not the cleaned coin type but the string toy made for amusing kids. Drill a couple of holes and add a string to twirl around your head to make a buzzing/whirling noise.

But then I realized it had 4 holes and positioning made me think charm bracelets...

S mint mark? no clue...
