Hello to all, I picked us this set of coins yesterday at a local antiques shop. The cent through quarter are 1996/95 but the Kennedy half is obviously what caught my attention with it being silver anyways and they only wanted a few bucks for the set. I'm wondering if this is a regular business strike or the SMS? It doesn't have a mintmark but the mirror and almost satin like finish on the the devices would make it the SMS? The pictures don't do it great justice, I took a picture from and angle and the Letters in Liberty actually looked like they were being reflected off of a mirror on the surface. The little discoloration and scratches are actually on the plastic covering as I gently slid it around to see the movement of the discoloration and scratches. Any help is appreciated.

It sure is shiny. Could it have been polished?

Possibly as I don't know the history of it, but their isn't any dirt or buildup around the devices under the microscope. And their is zero wear on the devices as well so not really any Die Deterioration as their wouldn't have been with the limited production of the SMS. Or it's a very early business strike? I don't know lol thanks for the reply

Well perhaps it wasn't fully struck up, but the eagle's head on the rev looks kinda flat me. Let's see what others think.

Tops of the tail feathers tells me it was polished. If the tops of the devices look flat, then it may have been polished. But most often when a coin is polished, more of the details are removed:

I agree with polished. I also the picture shows some porosity in the fields showing to the right and top of the eagle's wing. A quality struck coin should not show this unless damaged. But if damaged, then why does it look so shiny?

Another point is that while I do not know the origin of this set, there have been many places in the past who makes sets like these to sell or give out as promotional items. Typically the coins are polished to make them look better. To people who do not know coins, "Oooooh shiny!" means valuable and the sets "look better" to the people the business is targeting.

Some companies alter coins to make the new collectors think they are getting something special, when they are not what they buyer thinks it is. HSN sold a lot of plated quarters to the Rubes that thought they were getting something special. But instead later they realized that plated coins are just face value to the true collectors. Add to this the 'Avon collectable bottles, 'Beany Babies', glow in the dark plates that were radiated in the 50's. Anything to sell to take advantage of the unwary. People paying big money for collectables that end up not bring the money back to the buyers. This happens a lot on ebay. Machine Doubling selling for huge prices and on the same day, true variety coins going for just a little. But now, we can know what is collectable and not break the bank for something that is as worthless as gold plated cow dung.

So look before you leap. (Look first to see if there is a cactus where you could land) Don't put all your eggs in the same basket, with a bowling ball. Know what you are buying, before you buy. Then it something turns out bad, What do you do. I'm the type that if I make a bad purchase, I keep it. Why? To remind me not to do that again!
