Guaranteed if you tell your friends, relatives or casual acquaintances you're a coin collector, 99.5% of them will look at you like you have three stinkin heads. Actually, it's the same way I would look at someone who told me they collected stamps!! LoL!! Over the years, I've often wondered how to bring up the subject in a general conversation promoting the hobby, without diminishing it at the same time. I guess that's why I can pretty much sit here and tell you, the only people that know I collect coins is you and my wife! Maybe we're all here because we (okay, I) can't talk about it with non-collectors? I'm thinking maybe because most coin collectors are introverts?... I don't know. Hey, the next time you're at a coin show or coin club, take a good look around at some of those people! Wait a minute, I think I just answered my own question......my wife has been telling me I'm nuts for years! This has been very therapeutic. Thanks for listening, I needed that!

When I attend a coin show about 1/3 of the dealers look like they got there directly off the bus from Sleepy Hollow. That being said, every morning when I wash up in the bathroom, I see someone from Hobbiton staring back at me from the mirror' This month my disability check got lowered by $290. I told my son and he suggests that I 'lay-off' buying coins. He is probably the smart one between us two, but I can't stop, even knowing that I'll never get back more money than I paid for 99% of my coins. I don't drink alcohol, don't smoke, and (now that my 2nd wife left me) don't waste money on loose women; so spending my cash on coins seems very logical to me.

How can you tell an introverted coin collector from an extroverted coin collector? An extroverted coin collector looks at your shoes when he is talking to you.

If we are nuts, then everyone who collects (or hoards) something is nuts. I know it's not a competition, but somebody I know has more books than I have coins. She will REALLY "lose money" if she ever sells them (anyone out here try to sell a book on ebay?). The only difference is that, since we live in a city with a lot of academics, we know a lot of people with tons of books. Would I ever consider her to be nuts because of all the books in our (oops! I mean HER) house? Not if I want my key to still fit in the lock next time I come home.

Ha ha! If you want to see nuts, get a metal detector. Eventually you'll hook up with others in the hobby, as most of us that are dirtfisherman are also coin collectors. My favorite expression while out detecting an old park was to hear someone say, "look at that poor guy looking for money". Shortly after, I bent over to dig a Seated dime.
When I listen to LED ZEPPELIN...so do my neighbors... Roll hunting since '77 Dirt fishing since '72

Of course we are all nuts. Just in varying degrees. A shrink who thinks that they can define normal is just nuts. That said being nuts has well rewarded me when it comes to coins!

I actually don't know if all of us are nuts, I mean some of you maybe with 5 complete sets of a series but most of us, just enjoy coins and a lot of people actually like seeing the coins. It's cool the history that the coins have. I guess the error searchers and the VAM people are a little obsessed, and don't go on the Canadian forums as they bully you into completing sets and try to get you to pick all the varieties. But vast majority on here are almost normal :) I also do astrophotography and people in that hobby are totally nuts.
