PCGS - Three of the most beloved coins of the 20th century are the Winged Liberty Head (or "Mercury") Dime, Standing Liberty quarter, and Walking Liberty half dollar. All premiering in 1916, these three silver coins replaced the preceding Liberty Head (or "Barber") coinage on the dime, quarter, and half dollar and debuted during the Renaissance of American Coinage - a period when United States denominations from one-cent coin to $20 double eagle underwent massive artistic overhauls. The Mercury dime and Walking Liberty half dollar were designed by Adolph A. Weinman and the Standing Liberty quarter was the brainchild of Hermon A. MacNeil. While MacNeil's Standing Liberty quarter lasted only until 1930, Weinman's two designs were in production well into the 1940s, with the Mercury dime coming to an end in 1945 and the Walking Liberty half dollar continuing until 1947. Though the three vintage-1916 Liberty designs were eventually replaced with new motifs, Americans never really forgot the stunning depictions of Miss Liberty as portrayed on the Mercury dime, Standing Liberty quarter, and Walking Liberty half dollar. They were in production recently enough that even collectors who are only in their 50s, 60s, and 70s today can recall finding examples of these three types in circulation and were subsequently inspired to collect these coins due to these chance encounters. I missed getting the Walking Half, and now gold is getting expensive.

I missed all three but would love to have a set. These sold for prices considerably higher than the bullion value they contained at the time they came out if I recall correctly. Now they might be worth close to what they cost initially or maybe more in intrinsic value alone. Not sure? I don't have the numbers, but I think that's probably true.

Now they might be worth close to what they cost initially or maybe more in intrinsic value alone. The article gives the initial release prices: Dime $205, Quarter $485, Half $865. The current spot price for gold is about $1770, giving intrinsic values of $177, $442, and $885.

I picked up the 2016 Mercury dime early in the year for $225, so still more bullion and more than when they came out. There is a demand for these, so they may sell for over spor. I looked around and $250-$275 was a prevailing price for the OGP, it was cheaper to get the coin slabbed.

@hfjacinto,
Did you also get the original government package that came with the slab?

Alpha2814, thanks for the rundown on numbers. The half was the best bet I suppose.

Mudler very nice! Quote: Did you also get the original government package that came with the slab? No, it was cheaper slabbed than with the OGP. The package also takes up a lot of space. If I wanted the OGP it was $35 extra.

I also picked up the dime, right at the end of the year (I think they were about to go off sale at the end of 2016). $200 at the time.

This set is my favorite of all the gold coins the Mint has done so far this century!
Bought mine from the Mint so I'm probably still under water but I'm ok with that.

If you bought all 3 you're probably doing just fine. The dime was the most expensive (with respect to spot) at $2000/oz, and with current spot I'm only $22.55 in the red. I bet the other 2 are in the black at this point. But if you, like me, never intend to sell, it doesn't really matter.

One's in the OGP seems to sell at a slight premium, but with ebay and Paypal fees it will break even for the dime?

I have all 3... The boxes they came in are unique and probably the nicest the mint ever issued...
