Has anyone seen this before? It looks like a 1965 but the bottom is straight (not like a 5). I looked at it through microscope and the bottom straight line does not touch the top of the 5. I've also searched the web but found nothing similar. The coin weighs 3.1 so it's copper. It also appears to have double die in 'trust' but I don't believe there's an example of 1965 double die. I'm planning to send to PCGS to have it authenticated.

Yes, not that uncommon. Copper--being a relatively soft metal--can be displaced when hit. In this case, the cent was likely used in a old-style vending machine--insert coin, turn knob, and gum or other product is dispensed. The act to running the coin through such a device can impact (hit) the outer/near edge details of coins.

Rw59664 to CCF!

from what you have uploaded, do NOT submit for grading.

As you have guessed, yes this is a 1965 LMC where the 5 has taken a hit. DAMAGED

you stated that the word TRUST in IN GOD WE TRUST is doubled but you have not uploaded a picture. please upload a close up picture of TRUST.

also, when uploading pictures, make sure they are oriented correctly.

thanks

The straight line is not indented. It looks like it was punched at the mint like that. I think a vending machine would dent it wouldn't it?

Part of the vending machine's coin feeder mechanism moves across the surface of the coin at that location--about level with the surface of the coin, striking the raised copper number and 'shoving' it to the side. A horizontal hit, not vertical.

Best photo I can get with 'Trust' in it. Sorry. The line just looks so clean but your explanation has to be right.

Agree with PMD, most certainly not worth sending in for grading. Pics are not close or clear enough to focus on TRUST , but based on the die state, I'd say you're probably seeing DDD. Also looks like the R and second T took a hit.

@rw5, first welcome to CCF. Second, if you search with the keyword GUMBALL in the upper left hand corner of your screen you will see many other examples of this type of damage. It is an interesting find, but only worth face value.
