I'm thinking about buying this coin and would like your input. In particular, I'm interested in the grade it is likely to get (I would submit it to PCGS) and whether it is likely to get a Details designation.

At first glance it looks genuine. Color is good. No real distractions. Is the edge lettered (as it should be?) Should be "no problem." Fine 12 (just a guess).

The copperish-coloring at K-11 on both sides is accurate as shown?

What do you suspect, Coinfrog? As I am color blind I only see a "light patch."

Just asking if the photos accurately represent the coin as it appears to you, or whether these copperish areas are exaggerated or diminished in these pics.

The edge is lettered as expected. The light patches are the lighting rather than the coin. The coin is for the most part evenly colored throughout, and there is no copperish coloring anywhere. I am confident that the coin is authentic and that it has not been patched or anything of that nature. I have a pretty good sense of the grade, but am primarily concerned about cleaning (I think the scratches are not enough to warrant Details for a coin that old).

Thank you. If indeed these odd copperish areas are just a fluke of photography, than I'll say VF-20 or possibly 25.

Thanks for this interesting reference. I make no claim of expertise on the legitimacy of these dollars - just offering a grade opinion.

HAH! When you are over two hundred years old you'll have a few scratches as well. The "scratches" are not distracting. But now I worry about my own example. How much is the purchase price if I may ask? I hope mine is real and a VF-20.

If that's the actual color, then you're in trouble.

I'd say a solid, problem-free VF-20.

It's an auction and I would be bidding $1475 to take the lead. I'm leaning heavily against it at this point.

shoover4,
Does the coin speak to you? I mean, does it keep saying "Buy me please!" to you? Will you love it in the morning after the auction is over?
If you don't bid, will you kick yourself after the selling price is revealed?
I'd hate to be in your shoes...

LEANING AGAINST? Then back away... Another day will come...
