Any Standing Liberty quarter aficionados on here? I've hit up two local coin stores, without much success. I don't have a PayPal account, but thinking I probably should? Thanks in advance.

You're not trying to put together an AU/BU set from local shops, are you?!

A Standing Liberty quarter set in AU-BU is a tough nut . But if you have an over size coin budget go right ahead , break a leg . I wouldn't bother with e-Bay or coin shops , perhaps if your able to attend coin shows or just participate in large auction house bidding for the beauties you like .

You need to put together a budget and grade plan for each coin. Opening a paypal account would be wise. Six of the coins are going to cost over $500 each and those coins should be purchased in a TPG holder. To do the set cost effective you need to buy from all outlets: ebay, coin shows, local dealer, online dealers or action sites like David Lawrence, Gerry Fortin Coins, Heritage, Great Collections, Collectors Corner.

All in AU will be expensive. Most SLQ are so worn they are half their weight

Quote: Most SLQ are so worn they are half their weight Being a coin nerd, I had to check this statement. I pulled out 6 dateless SLQs to check their weights. These coins are typical heavily worn "slicks" with Fair to Good detail. Weights ranged from 5.54 to 5.94 grams, with an average of 5.74 grams. Since the target weight for an SLQ is 6.25 grams, these worn pieces average nearly 92% of their original weight. I recall checking worn Barber quarters and they showed a similar degree of weight loss in the lowest grades.

I'm currently doing this set in AU/BU, it is easy to get the common dates, however for the early D and S mints be prepared to pay above expected prices, my experience from bidding on them has been that they are very popular.

I guess I should preface this post, with the fact that I just missed out, on a mostly complete BU set, at the Houston money show last Friday. I was just minutes late, someone was viewing, and negotiating on the set. I had brought my set to upgrade, along with other book sets. I know this will be an expensive venture, but I want a set to be admired.

Call me crazy, but after having "completed" my Dansco 7070 Registry set after many decades, I needed to start a new numismatic project, so I started a Full Head SLQ DATE set. Doing the date set greatly reduces the number of coins required. I'm halfway done - 7 down, 7 to go. The 1916 will be the budget buster! Here's a hotlink for you to see how I'm doing so far: https://www.PCGS.com/setregistry/qu...edset/232226

Slider23 offers excellent advice. If at any point you look to purchase slabbed coins, instead of PayPal, you can arrange payment via eCheck, by setting up an electronic link between your bank checking account and places like Great Collections and Heritage.

Good advice. Gerry is a great guy and friend of the shop I work at. He's done me right on every deal and is not afraid to talk bad about his own coins when they deserve it. A very honest guy.

Winesteven, a really lofty goal with all FH even if it's just the year set, and super nice looking set you've managed to put together so far, well done! I see DLRC has a non FH 1916 MS65 at close to $27K then APMEX has a FH MS66 for $43K currently at least they aren't double the price. I also learned there are a few FH 1916 as low as AU53 out there also from the PCGS pop. reports. Don't know if you saw this post I made a few months back on JH Cline's SLQ book I won at a Bid or Buy sale. A book I've always wanted and just never had which is surprising considering how big my numismatic library is (3500+ books and catalogs now). It turned out to be a really cool edition with a neat provenance. http://goccf.com/t/382684

While the Newman Portal may have more, perhaps your library is even nicer than that of the ANA? Regardless, it's wonderful. Our hobby lost a great positive asset of our hobby when JH Cline passed away. He literally "wrote the book" on SLQ's which was his specialty. I read via your hotlink about that so VERY special book with the "additions" you successfully purchased. So special! Regarding my need at some point for a 1916 Full Head SLQ, shortly BEFORE I started my set a real nice MS64FH graded by PCGS with a CAC showed up on auction. It sold at a very fair price, I determined via research that it was bought by a dealer. I offered more than $2,000 over his cost, but was turned down. He came down in price, but was $1,300 higher than my best offer. That coin is still for sale over six months later. Maybe some day before it's sold we can come to terms, But probably not, and that's OK.
