This is an effect of Die Deterioration, called "die flow lines"

Classic die flow lines--non uncommon with Roosevelt dimes. Very nice example.

Just to clarify ijn's comment - very nice example and looks interesting, but does not add any numismatic value.

Is the coin in a plastic holder? You know where I'm going with this question?

It is showing the classic die flow lines on the fields from extreme die wear because of being struck with a VLDS (Very-Late-Die-State) die. 54% of the coins from all dies look like this from die wear.

I'm to scared to take the coins out of plastic. I'm just learning how to treat them. When I get more comfortable I will get more brave.
